Even if it was brought up in Europe already, it took great courage and moral conviction to try and bring that change to this side of the Atlantic in that day. So you can't discount that at all. I don't know much about the rest of his life and what wicked unsaintly ways he behaved but he definitely deserves a lot of praise for changing the slavery culture in US. He ultimately paid for this decision with his life.

As you can see by the current issue of 300 million guns in America, even if that problem has been dealt with in Europe for the most part, change does not happen easily or at all possibly. People have been used to certain way of life for hundreds of years...whether it be guns, slaves, free speech (communist or despotic countries), etc. Sometimes, when it comes to human rights or better quality of life for people, its incredibly hard to change peoples minds and way of thinking. I will never think of Lincoln as overrated for that very reason.

I vouch for : Mère Teresa and Abbé Pierre for charity support. Martin Luther King for human / civil rights.

But as real, HOLY SAINT..? Only Jesus-Christ, to be honest!

Yes, but the fact he is more well-known than William Wilberforce seems wrong and the same will happen with that the U.S president that abolishes guns/death penalty will be remembered ,while whoever did the same in Europe years before will be forgotten.
