With the year end sale starting soon, I thought it may be a good opportunity to fill some holes in my collection, such as Baldur's Gate 2.

Then I remembered that Atari recently introduced a collection of these old games, which includes BG1+2, Icewind Dale 1+2, Planescape: Torment and Temple of Elemental Evil. That's all for $20 and I can buy it at GamersGate, which also says it's DRM free.

So now I'm rather conflicted. I only miss BG2 and the Icewind Dale games from that collection, and buying BG2 would probably be enough to satisfy me, but the completist in me thinks that having digital versions of all these games is pretty nice.

(Since you didn't choose to explain why.) That's what I'm comparing. Christmas sale = 50% off = $5 per game. Total cost to buy these 6 games on sale at GOG: $28. Total for the pack at GamersGate: $20. So it's basically down to whether I want to buy all of them or not. If I buy just BG2 it's just $5 on the Christmas sale.

1. You listed Gamer's Gate as claiming the package is completely DRM free, I can't even find it after a quick search, but I doubt that is the case.

2. You said yourself, you would be satisfied with spending less at GOG and just getting what you wanted, yet you're convincing yourself to spend more on a bundle that comes with games you probably didn't even intend to get in the first place.

3. You're asking here, not at Gamer's Gate, that's because there's an active community of people here to discuss the decision. I'm not even sure if GG has a community, so the one here is more worth supporting by default.

4. There's never been a better time. In 24 hours the games you want will be half price. You only wanted BG2 and Icewind Dale, so you can get everything you want for $10.

5. GOG will allow you to pay with your credit/debit card. WIth Gamer's Gate you have to go through paypal, which is ebil.

Does the GG bundle contains all the soundtracks?

Good point. I don't know, but I imagine not. I'll have to look into this. Why? GG is pretty good at listing DRM. For example for Bioshock 2 ($4.99 today) it says "DRM: SecuROM". I trust GG. True, but I do feel it's a pain to install games from CD's (and do the work required to not have to switch CD's mid game), and it would be nice to have digital copies of the games I already have.

The rest of your points are less important. And I tend to buy quite a bit with PayPal.

Id say suport GoG just because of the fact that they make Witcher, and i want more Witcher :D

GG is a distributor. GOG is linked to a developer. Which do u wanna support?

I have a few (maybe 5 or 6) games from Gamersgate. When you install one of their games, it uses their wrapper around the game (e.g. each game has an executable wrapper that downloads and stores the install in a subdirectory).

DRM on Gamersgate means this...

You NEED to connect to Gamersgate to install every time, but there's no SecuROM, Tages, Starforce, etc. (Install only when internet is available, but could be any computer) (see third question on Gamersgate FAQ)

On GOG...
Once you download, it's a CRC check and then go! (Download one place, install anywhere)

My advice: If you can get a game on GOG, then get it on GOG. Even if that means paying slightly more - it's justified because you also _get_ more: Bonus content, an active community that discusses the games in dedicated forums (there are, for example, several mod setup guides for the Baldur's Gate series in the GOG forum), and - most importantly - the game is really yours to keep, you don't have to rely on any online activation service for further installs.

If you're only interested in one game right now, you could also buy this one at GOG and wait until the others go on sale at either distributor. That's probably the financially most viable route.

gamersgate needs internet to install... beyond that they truly are DRMfree...

i like and use GG games but there not 100% DRM free in that regard...

You're both correct. Actiondan lists correctly the Gamergate terms of service. The thread you linked describes a workaround that currently does eem to work, but if it doesn't, you're screwed.
