And if you are the lazy type, be a necromancer.
To download, the copy on my system is a little under 2GB.
As for the game-play, it really is addictive. I played Diablo 2 from beginning to the very end of the highest difficulty as a necromancer skeleton lord over the course of about 3 years. It really is a very addictive game, and if you can find a friend to play with it is even better.

When I installed it onto my Win7 machine it requires admin access to play otherwise it gets a little funny, but it is really worth every second for me.

Well yes and no. The Necro does have SOME arm strength and in some of the tighter areas (the nest) it's too big of a pain to have a whole army with you. On top of that he has the coolest looking armor!

Regarding an earlier post, I tried that high res patch and it worked but just didn't seem worth it. It was so obviously a 'forced' job and just never felt right so I went back to the original res and, while not great, gets the job done.

I could talk about this game for hours and hours and hours.
I am such a D2 fiend!

Navagon: Nooo! Don't do it! That game is like crack. You know it's bad, but you're addicted to it anyway. There are definitely better ARPGs out there now. Titan Quest is very good.
Hey I beaten Diablo 2 and 1 and I did not get addicted :P
Buy Diablo 2? Is it worth it? Simply.....*YES*
Depends about games.. otherwise it truly sucks
Oh, you want to rush me over the corpses of your fallen comrades? It'd be a shame if they... exploded.
Diablo 1 and 2 are awesome games.

Regarding the hellfire expansion to diablo 1, goodluck getting a legal copy for a sensible price.

Regarding diablo 2:
Dont use a barbarian, if you go through the nightmare and hell playthroughs you get monsters that are immune to physical damage which the barb relies on, you can still kill them with a barb but its so much easier with other characters, same goes for the sorc and magic damage.

Look for it on disc cheaper, I picked up a spare copy of diablo 2 and expansion for less than 5£ and unless Blizzard have changed it you can still register your cd codes on the blizzard site. might be cheaper

Titanium: Oh, you want to rush me over the corpses of your fallen comrades? It'd be a shame if they... exploded.
Yeah I forgot, "Corpse Explosion". Easily one of the coolest powers in any game anywhere ever. Another cool thing is what I call the "Nose Bleed Effect" using the Barbarian. Use 'Leap' NOT 'Leap & Attack' and when you land all the baddies next to you suffer a sudden and quick nose bleed. IT'S FUCKING BEAUTIFUL!
Diablo 2 is definitely still an awesome game.

Do remember that you don't necessarily have to buy it off the Blizzard Store. If you find it cheap somewhere on disc, you can redeem the code on the Blizzard (Battle.net) site and download it the same way. Shop around.

iippo: Personally id stick to either D3...
Not sure if serious...

darthvader39560: Also, if I wanted to buy just Diablo 2 off blizzard, what would the download size be?)
1.51GB plus the small 2.5MB downloader.

I beat Diablo 1 and instead got disgusted. I wanted all those hours of my life back. I uninstalled it and threw the disc out along with the Hellfire expansion that I never even used. To me it looked like Diablo 2 was the same game as 1 but on steroids, kinda like Doom 1 vs Doom 2. So I never bothered with the second Diablo. I suppose if you like games like Torchlight and Titan Quest then Diablo 2 is a must buy, otherwise save your money.
More than worth it. Get it.

Harsh man.
Diablo 2 is still enjoyable and has an active community on Battle.net, I used to play ladder frequently (a few months ago). You will encounter a lot of cheating though and many of the players are potheads that do little aside from discussing marijuana during games. It makes for an interesting experience. Once you get to a certain point, you'll find yourself doing Baal runs all the time. There used to be runs against higher level bosses, but they required items and I've rarely seen such runs recently.

I think D2 stands on it's own still, even with games like Torchlight out there. I think the reason I find D2 so appealing versus other titles are the classes and skills available, as hard as other developers tried to emulate the D2 formula, I always felt that they got everything right except for the classes and skills. I always felt the classes and skills available in D2 were really interesting and a major part of what made the game enjoyable.
