It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

We're happy to present a reasonably polished beta version of our latest Downloader. It's more robust than the current one and sports similar features, but the best thing about it is that it's made entirely in-house. We've got this guy who wrote it from the ground up, which means we can be a lot more flexible when it comes to fixing bugs and introducing new features (and we've got some cool ones lined up!).

Before we roll out the final release, we would like some of you guys and gals to try it out and let us know in case you encounter any problems.

Above problems are already fixed, will be pushed with the next release.

You can download the installer here:
http://static.gog.com/download/d3/beta/Setup_Downloader_3.0.24.exe

On Windows XP and Vista, the installer will automatically download the .NET Framework, if you don't have it already. Once you launch the actual app, it's much like the current Downloader, so you should feel right at home.
We will keep rolling out new versions as we remove bugs and add stuff. You will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch the Downloader, or check for updated manually (under Settings).

Let us know if you like it, or if you encounter any issues we don't know about!

Hello everyone,

Guess it’s time for a proper introduction as I’m on the GOG Team for a while now.
I’m the person solely dedicated to developing our new downloader, so in case of any questions and problems you can always contact me.

As Firek wrote, we have many new features in store for our downloader, so this is just the beginning.

Any comments, suggestions and bug reports are more than welcome.

Have fun playing with the downloader :)

bazilisek: The magnifying glass in the download row takes me to the My Documents folder, not where I selected the files should be downloaded. Otherwise, it seems to run quite smoothly so far.
Hmm, the magnifying glass should take you to the folder to which the game is downloading, if this works otherwise for you, let me know.

bazilisek: Random suggestions: I'd like to have an option to turn off the systray icon and use the progress bar of the taskbar icon (Win7). And pretty please, add the option of using the downloader to grab all extras at once. Also, are you planning to do an automatic check for updated installers? That would be sweet.
The use of Windows 7 taskbar icon is of course planned, so stay tuned for future updates :)

bazilisek: Bug: resizing the width of the window to wider and back sometimes breaks the layout (see screenshot). But I haven't been able to reproduce it since, so it might be just a freak occurrence.
This happened only once for you? I'll have a look at it. Thanks for the suggestions :)

kavazovangel: Can you please tell me what .NET version it uses?
.NET 3.5, the installer should detect it and install if required.

kavazovangel: Oh, thanks.. Any chance of upgrading it to 4.0? Currently on Windows 8, 4.0 is the minimum version that is supported by default.

4.0 is already supported on XP, Vista, and 7, and if you're targeting the client profile, it would require even less space for installation.

(just some pre-downloading feedback, trying to download the file but getting disconnects when it reaches around 50-60%)
The downloader is based on 3.5 for one main reason. It is built in on the most popular Windows version, which is of course the 7. So for the most of you it will run without installing any additional software. If Windows 8 comes out officially we will of course think about switching to .NET 4, in the mean time, you can install .NET 3.5 on Windows 8 and enjoy the downloader as well.

As for the "disconnects", can you write a bit more about it? What games you are downloading? Do all downloads break or not?
avatar
kavazovangel: I cannot download the downloader. :) Wait, trying again... bah, again. It stopped downloading at 44%.

Using IE10, and downloading with ~18-20 KBps.
Oh, ok :)

It's a matter of a timeout, try downloading from this link:
http://static.gog.com/download/d3/beta/Setup_Downloader_3.0.12.exe

I've also changed the url in Firek's post to the one above. Should you encounter any problems, let me know.

HGiles: Yes! I'm downloading now. If I run into any problems I'll let you know.

Random question: Have you thought about making sure this runs on Mono? Then Linux and Mac users can use this out of the box.
We haven't tried it yet but we'll think about it. Thank you for your suggestion.

SLP2000: So, GOG client, just not mandatory?
Nope, just another option of downloading our games :)

avatar
Tormentfan: I've never understood the need for a Gog dowloader.
As I've said, it is just an option, we won't force anyone to use it.
Post edited March 16, 2012 by Fallen_Zen
And I'm just ensuring everyone that it was and will still be an option :)

bazilisek: Simple. If it conveniently downloads extras and checks for new builds, I'll use it. Otherwise, I will keep using my browser, because my internet connection is mostly stable. But for some people, stability is a major issue, and browsers don't always resume.
Our list of planned features is getting long. Can't say yet what we have in store but a lot of cool things will be coming to the new downloader.
avatar
LBartley: Adding Dragonshard seems to crash the application.
I'll take a look at it. Try re-adding the game to see if the problem occurs again. In the mean time you can send me your log file, details on PM.
avatar
Cleidophoros: I don't know anything about programming but what I am gonna ask for must be the most difficult feature to implement since no DD service offers it; How about a download speed limit? I have a slow connection and the downloader is using every bit of it.
That's already implemented. You can dial the connections down to as few as 1, I believe.
avatar
Vagabond: Can't seem to download ROTT with the downloader. It keeps resetting the download.
Thanks. Your info helped me find the cause of the problem. On next downloader update it should work fine.
avatar
Vagabond: Great! I found another issue: the downloader unpauses whenever another game is added to the queue. If I paused downloads, it gets auto-started again after I add another game.
Thanks.
avatar
Vagabond: Some more issues. Upon launch, I get a JIT dialogue box. (see screen).

Another: When adding to the queue Republic: The Revolution, the download doesn't start. It's probably because this game was removed from the catalog while ago.
The debugger window always opens up for you? If not, since when it is happening?
Your log file will be much appreciated.

As for the Republic: The Revolution, I'll ask what can we do about it if anything.

Thanks!

P.S. We'll be pushing an update tomorrow for the downloader, maybe the problem is already fixed.

himselfe: Tried the new beta as the current downloader has stopped working for me (see: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/gog_downloader_appears_to_be_broken), and it seems to work fine, the only issue I found so far is that is seems to take quite a number of seconds (in the range of ~20) between launching the program and the main window appearing, not sure if this is an issue or just the fact it's a .NET app, as .NET apps tend to be generally quite horrible anyway.

It's a bit dssapointing to see the downloader using the .NET framework, but such is the trend these days, and I guess it offers the easiest maintenance path for the GoG code monkey(s). :P
Good to hear it's working for you :) As for the opening times, I can do some benchmarking. Can you tell me your computer specs and OS? I'll try to imitate the environment.

kavazovangel: Hats? Achievements? :D
Just one hat. But it's an awesome one. ;)
