Planet Permadeath.

Risk of Rain, a procedurally generated action-packed platformer with brilliant, challenging gameplay and appealing retro graphics, in which time matters much more then winning, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 24 hours!

Personal log, entry 58-78. It's cold and dark in here. So cold, that I can feel it through my nanofiber suit. Strange alien monsters are roaming the place, dragging their claws in the dusty ground, clapping their jaws, red eyes flashing in the distance. I can hear them growl even through the thin atmosphere of poisonous gases. If it wasn't for the valuable artifacts there's no way I would've come here. I might be one of the toughest, meanest, deadliest people in the galaxy, but I swear--this planet will be the end of me. Well, that's enough yapping, time to get to work. End log.

Risk of Rain is an action platformer with roguelike elements. With permanent death as a primary feature, players will have to play their best to get as far as possible. Fight on a mysterious planet with randomly spawning enemies and bosses, either alone or with 3 friends in online co-op. With over 100 items at your disposal, you will find the tools you need to find the teleporter back home. Discover a myriad of randomly chosen stages, from the desolate forest to the frozen tundra. With procedural content generation and a sense of urgency that keeps the game exciting, this one will keep you glued to the screen for a long time. You will be failing, especially at first, but the game will have you coming back for more and more!

Start your journey into the land of random risks and ever-ticking clock in Risk of Rain, for only $3.99! The 60% off Indie Gem Promo discount offer lasts until Thursday, April 10, at 9:59AM GMT.

Barefoot_Monkey: Risk of Rain for $3.99? It's like God's subscriber base has gone down so he's moving to a Free-to-Play model with microtransactions.
...with permadeath (but his son got a cheat code).

IAmSinistar: It's a good game, but hard as heck. After a ton of plays I still can't get past the fourth level. Regardless I still recommend it. It's got a lot of variation, cool art, great music, and a bunch of unlockable characters and items. It's more than worth this sale price.
Agreed, I too haven't made it past the 4th level but have very much enjoyed my time playing it thus far. The combination of all the different abilities is fun just to see what you get, though at least for my playstyle I've found a couple that make life much easier only have gotten them all together once though which was my best run so far. Hit maximum difficulty and was still surviving but once the boss fight started got too many things attacking at once and died.
Wasn't expecting this on sale so soon. I feel like it just came out!

I still scored it though, even if I know I'll be crying in regards to the deaths I'll probably rack up ;D (that's a smile and tears, all in one)

Very neat game, should take it up again, finished it only once (with the engi) but really amusing and challenging indeed!
Pegasus Prime tomorrow! *thumbs up*

I'm getting better with the Engineer now that I am learning to play more strategically. So far I have tended to get the furthest with the Prisoner, since my instinct is for pure slaughter. Still have a number of characters to unlock yet.
Got it, though I bet this game is going to eat me for breakfast. When I think platformer I think of jumping puzzle instagib.

The Prisoner is a creature you can unlock on the third level, I believe? Top right hand area of the map; you "use" the odd cage he's in, then you kill the creature to unlock. May depend on getting the correct map for the third level- it's only one of two, and you can unlock on easy, so try again if needed.

Love love love this game. Had it for ages, finally beat it the other night on an epic 80 minute run (80 mins of non-stop action- better than most movies!) Unlocked six characters, several items, and got four Steam achievements in the process. It was insane. (getting four Transfusions and an Alien Heart really helped.. my hp was somewhere above 2k)

Yes, it's old style graphics, but that does not in any way reduce the fun or the entertainment factor- enemies scale with the time bar, and the screen is almost always highly populated.. and just wait for those boss fights! 60 enemies on screen at once wasn't uncommon..

Will the goodies be added at a later date?
For anyone on the fence, here's TotalBiscuit's WTF is for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zh30kl6nwY

He said it's his favorite roguelike style game that has come out so far, and he "Absolutely!" recommends it.
I've had my eye on it for a while, I guess it's a good occasion to try!

That's correct. It's also referred to as "Acrid" in the character select screen. I find it especially useful because it has a couple special attacks that do damage over time.

Risk of Rain, along with Rogue Legacy, has really convinced me of the viability of the "roguelike platformer" subgenre of game.
