The fighting system, the horrible voice acting, volume of content but no actual depth (on the contrary there is no volume even, very linear and unopen)... this is exactly why I sold my copy of Skyrim and now I'm experiencing it all over again.
Perhaps the second one is better, as I own it and was considering skipping-to.
IDK, maybe I'm just bringing out the worst of the game because I'm playing it on hard. Maybe there's a console command that can fix that? I'm in Vizima and I'm looking for those relic things. I just have no interest in continuing, the story has failed to grasp me and the combat doesn't seem to have any depth.

So do you advise me to look at a recap video and just move on to the sequel, continue on because the story/gameplay will pick up, what?
I enjoyed Witcher 1 but I also read Sapkowski's materials to appreciate it. I used Polish voice overs over English because the VO work in Witcher has been pretty pitiful to say the least. At least in Polish, it doesn't bother me as much.

The combat isn't as involved as in Witcher 2, and I cannot speak about the difficulty because I didn't play it on hard.
I liked it. Wasn't my favorite game ever but it was still worth my money.
I didn't love it, for reasons you said. It's slow moving in the middle, the translation is terrible even in the extended edition and the combat leaves a lot to be desired. That said I still finished it and overall enjoyed it, it had a nice tone and places.

TW2 is a ten times better game though.

If you're not enjoying it why in gods name are you playing it on hard?

Eh... I dunno.
I liked the Witcher when I played it through the first time. But after that I've tried to play it through twice and I've always got bored with it.

The Withcer 2 is, as many have said, a much better game. It has its own flaws, but the overall experience is better.
Yeah, happens also to me with many games, I don't enjoy them...

Yeah, it's crazy, right? It's like the last time I was playing World of Warcraft and I was totally not enjoying it.
I actually struggled to like the game at first because the combat system was not like anything I had ever used before and I didn't think I'd be able to like it. I got used to it much faster than I thought I would though, and I now consider The Witcher to be an amazing game. I loved it, and I'm 100% sure I'll play through it again eventually. I still haven't played much of 2, though.
Overall it's a good game, but like mentioned above, the Kombat is a bit wonky.
Personally, I never got into the first Witcher game. The second one is awesome though. Although you might lack some background details and such if you skip the first game, I think the second game is too great to pass up. I would recommend you move on to play the second game and maybe come back to the first later on.
I much preferred the 1st Witcher in terms of atmosphere, music and story.

TWR 2 is very linear and closed, too. You'll also miss the large inventory and meditation during combat, probably. It's more like an action rpg with choosing different dialogue options during a linear campaign.

A -linear- campaign? Rarely have I seen a storyline that would be as branched and varied, it's effectively non-liner as far as modern videogaming writing goes. On top of that, TW 2 gives you 3 big locations, all of which are fairly open - second more corridirish than the first and the last probably being the worst offender, still, you are always provided with very open areas, much more so than in most modern Bioware RPGs.
