Not always, no. But it was several years ago that they did introduce that. At least I think I downloaded stuff from there many years ago before being required to make an account (which I found annoying back then too), but my memory may very well not be completely intact..

Yep, they're taking it down. One of the largest patch and demo collecting sites will not be updated any longer, and who knows how long it'll take before they decide to wipe it from the internet.
Because FUCK THE USERS, that's why.

Never used it in years although i did use it a lot in the late 90s for mods for my games. Shame to see a bit of history gone but considering it wasnt being updated much dont think it will impact the gaming public.

Do you really think it is their responsibility to host patches and shit forever? Really?

1. I don't have a fast internet speed and some of the demos are quite large
2. I don't have enough hard drive space to back up the demos
3. Due to the whole mega upload copy infringement deal even if I could somehow download all the demos I'd be afraid to upload them elsewhere

The queue was pretty bad. I quit using the site several years ago when spyware apps starting throwing flags at it. It was the only "legitimate" gaming site that would get flagged. And after cleanup, it would reflag every time I visited that site.
I've also pretty much quit playing demos. Its become much easier to tell whether I'd like a game or not over the years.
For downloads, I expect community sites to have game specific downloads or I use ModDB. I don't think I've even visited Fileplanet in over 5 years. I suspect I'm not the only one, else they would have reason to keep it up.
