Apathy1989: The reality? Multiplayer is easier. For them. No need to program AI opponents, far less need to provide new challenges since player challenge eachother.
Depends on the kind of game as well as the team's capabilities. There's single player games without multiplayer because the devs were unable to come up with a way to integrate it, there's also multiplayer games that lack singleplayer because of the content and/or AI programming necessary for it. I don't think that there's a general rule as to which one is easier. Also note that creating pure MP games is the riskier business as the game will die out if it doesn't attract enough gamers early on - and creating a popular MP game is a huge challenge.

Yeah I suppose for a consumer, its a bit of a risk buying an multiplayer only game. What happens if no one plays it? It doesn't take off? You basically cannot play the game.

At least if it has singleplayer, no matter how rubbish, you can get your monies worth.

Big titles like CoD will always get the numbers though, its what 95% of people buy it for (statistic out of my ass).

Wishbone: Ah, but that game is certainly the exception to the rule that achievements are pointless e-peen extensions.

SimonG: You say pointless, I say fun.

Ever since I beaten Mega Man 2 two on my best friends (he never made it) NES I love comparing gaming achievements.
Yeah but did you beat the original Mega Man? :p
Idiot says people misunderstood what he said

I love the thread title.
To be fair what he said in the follow-up is exactly how I understood what he said in the original article, and apparently many more forum members did too. I think most of people hating him just red the title and went 'ohmygod' without actually bothering to read the whole thing.

Gamers? Jumping to conclusions?! Impossible!

orcishgamer: Is that a new euphemism for fucking?:)
No, The Game of Life is this really creepy board game where you pimp out your own children for big money. (Not kidding, either; I played it once, and the game pays you for having children.)

Look, we have all these little teapots here, tempests will be a necessity, I'm afraid!

I know, I played it, I just found his usage so amusing I had to tease. I also think my game sounds like more fun;)

He just backpedals and makes the statement less strong. In the end it is less clear what he thinks except that talking about games is a good thing. :)

StingingVelvet: I am full of rage threads lately.

Anyway, here you go.

Rant and debate away. Personally games are a break from social interaction for me, something I put headphones on and use to escape my constant interactions with others. Saying games should always be social means fuck off then.

Didn't read the link but totally agree.

When I buy a game I don't want others to judge rather or not I can actually play that game...

ie; "Screwz U n00bz! You're banned from my server and it's the ONLY server!"

Or, like with O.R.B. I just bought - I don't think anyone went online with that game ever. What a waste of cash it would be had it been multiplayer dependent.

Folks that want multiplayer only, only want more victims they can n00b all over the place or want a steady flow of cash paid to their in game shop.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I get the distinct feeling that everything nowadays seems to be pushing towards forcing people to socialize and give up personal privacy. How long till having a Facebook account is mandatory for applying for a job. And same goes for gaming, it's an ongoing push by the popamole developers to force multiplayer, where games are reduced to some kind of "online sport" or competition.

Multiplayer is also inherently DRM.

Multiplayer games should still be encouraged and some games are just too large in scale to program AI for but forgetting Single Player all together is a massive no-no.

Battlefield 2 would've meant so much more to me if they would have, at least, included the console single player mode, as by the time I finally bought it, I couldn't really play it because the few players left either wanted to play 'Head Phone' seriously or I had too low of ping.

Counter Strike and Unreal 2004 are good examples of multiplayer focused games that are enjoyable offline as well. Unreal 2004 has awesome AI and Counter Strike is cool to if you ad the fan-made AI MOD to improve the game's default AI.

I should also point out that GOG would have nothing to sell right now if all of these nineties game were Master Server Dependent.

I've considered this and I've never respected a community of neighbors around me that look down their nose at me through my windows.

I definitely agree with minding our own business.

I think anyone that does want social interaction online, however, are being cattled into areas where they are easier to monitor for safety reasons.

The interwebs are definitely not as broad-ranged and interesting as they used to be but I have to say that it's been a long friggin' time since I've last been stalked and harassed through the net.

So in this instance I would think that they would want to encourage some folks to keep clean by keeping to themselves.

But why would anyone prefer multiplayer gaming to SP?

The internet is a cesspool
