"Don't lose any sleep over it, but astronomers suspect that hundreds of medium-sized black holes are roaming loose in the Milky Way. These rogues, according to a new study, are the orphaned central black holes of the many smaller galaxies that the Milky Way has swallowed over its billions of years of existence. If one of them is discovered, it could provide important clues about the evolution of our galaxy."
Running Amok in the Milky Way
Astrophysics, intriguing KingofGnG since 1985 :-P
Oh, and this is as much as dangerous as the deadly deadly dangerous swine flu, so beware where you go hitchhiking in the galaxy this spring, and don't forget to bring the towel with you. Never XD
if i had to choose whether to die because pig had a flu or be sucked off by a big black hole.
I choose the second. Much more fun.
I think a legitimate scientific experiment would be to throw pigs into a black hole and document how awesome it is.
I've always been very fascinated by space, so this is good information. However, it still looks like we're some (light)years away before turning Freespace 2 into a reality

Yeah, it combines several science disciplines:
- Astronomy
- of course Physics
- Biology
- General Awesomeness
Astronomers take virtual plunge into black hole
Falling into a black hole: not so funny, actually XD

<3 the video in that article. So scary, yet so fascinating. Despite what scientists claim that the black hole is easy to understand, it still looks incredibly complex

Well, math is complex, concept is not: a black hole is a singularity, that is some astrophysical object in which time, space, energy and matter do not exist, or better still jam themselves into something completely different, all in a single ideal "point". That's it, not so complex, hence H.P.Lovecraft was right about non-euclidean dimensions of space and time. Here there is no geometry at all XD
What it feels like to die in a black hole
Very nice, indeed, I've got to buy that book :-P

The Black Hole was the only disney movie I ever liked. Awesome soundtrack. If I ever go into a black hole, I'm so listening to the movie theme as I go in.
Also, there should be laws requiring black holes to be on a leash

If you like Astrophysics (I actually took a course in it at Uni, I still dip into the coursebook), you should do everything within your power to obtain and watch The Universe series from History.

Funnily enough I just watched that last week.

I'd just expect to find myself at Sierra HQ back in 1989, perhaps with two guys from Andromeda.
Maybe it's already happening, maybe there is one right on top of us. O...h...s..s.s..h...hhh...iiiiiiiiiii.....

That guy is a genius :) Made me want to buy that book as well!

Black holes and singularities are actually two different things, and while black holes are theorized to all have a singularity at the center, not all theoretical singularities are part of a black hole. Also, a black hole is defined as any object that has a radius less than the Schwarzschild radius for the mass of the object. The Schwarzschild radius for a mass is the minimum distance at which light could escape from the gravitational pull of the mass.
