I was just evaluating HoMM 4 and when I thought about the music, I was terrified. It was well done, just repititious.

I've also made a Jeremy Soule mix ( http://www.gog.com/en/mix/games_with_music_by_jeremey_soule ), who is a composer of music that I just absoulely love.

I recently bought a game b/c it said on its cover "Music by Jeremy Soule".

But when we buy games, we almost always look at reviews and the developer, and that's about it. Right? (I could be wrong) But when we play it, music, voiceovers and graphics are pivotal and even rival (or possibly "complete") gameplay in some instances.

When it comes to games, how important is the music to you? And, got any favs?

by the way, my top music games are probably (in no particular order):

Icewind Dale
Guild Wars
Oblivion/Morrowind
Imperium Galactica 2
Legend of Zeldas

I rarely if ever encounter games with truly exceptional music, so I don't pay much attention to who's involved when I'm looking at a new game, and there are few if any names that I'd recognize anyway.

That said, Deus Ex, Thunderscape, the Crusader games and the Ys series instantly come to mind as having excellent and consistently memorable music.
To me music is much more important than GFX in building games atmosphere. Just listen to the music from Fallout, Planscape Torment, UFO1&2…

Not very. Some tunes stick out on some missions but I rarely ever notice music as something more than ambient sound. Some music might help the atmosphere a lot but they're not usually memorable and some soundtracks are really wonderful and much more enjoyable outside the game than in it.
Good music trumps bad voice acting every time.
Very.
Music is very important for setting the mood in a game for me.

If I find the music bad or dull, I'll just mute it and run winamp in the background.

Jeremy Soule is very good (Total Annihilation music in particular), but my personal favourite is probably Frank Klepacki (Worked with Westwood for ages, on games like C&C and the Legend of Kyrandia).
Music is only important if it improves the experience...

Oblivion's music is great, too bad it ruins the experience. WoW's music on the other hand, is a masterpiece, it makes the game so much better.

It's very important for me. A lot of the time I have to strike a balance between possible VO and music (if they're both turned up to max I struggle to hear the VO sometimes), but it's very rare that I play games without music. One of my friends refuses to play games with music on and I just don't understand since it can set the atmosphere so nicely.

I met Jeremy Soule last year, I got his autograph on my wall actually! :P
Most of the time I won't even notice the music in games. But if its really bad or really good then I might. I actually think a lot of games could set better moods if they used less or no music. Clive Barker's Undying anyone?
To this day I hear the Ultima series music in my head and have a compulsion to replay them... It just takes hearing "Stones" to make me all nostalgic for the series!
Music is incredibly important to me.

I've always liked many of the soundtracks for N64 games...

Banjo-Kazooie
Diddy Kong Racing
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (I love the Gerudo Valley tune)
Space Station Silicon Valley
Star Fox 64
Super Mario 64

Donkey Kong Country
F-Zero GX
Golden Sun (love the standard battle theme)
Pokemon Red/Blue/Green/Yellow
Rolling Thunder (I really just like the first level's song, which shows up a few times)
Well, put it this way: most of my favourite classics have kick arse scores. I think that is something that has made playing them so much more desirable and has helped lodge them into my long term memory.
Music would probably be more important to me in games if I actually ever thought I had anything to look forward to. Most games aim for "passable ambient noise."
