oh and i speak english and spanish and english is my first language but i had forgot it spinding over a year in the country of mexico
I love how you then go on to join in on the topic of languages. :P But it's all good, right? You have an answer to your problem, and we're happily chatting away. No need to throw around ash holes or any of the like.

Maighstir: Partially a joke, I don't actually know how simple or complex Swedish is compared to many other languages. Perhaps I should know, seeing how I work at a school where we teach (among other things) Swedish for Immigrants (not I personally, I'm part of the IT staff), but I have heard more than a few stories from the teachers about the problems their students have (no similar stories from other subjects).

Almost, but no quite. "...you know German, so you...", and "oddities of Swedish" (or "Swedish's oddities"). I didn't include other scandinavian languages in either group as I - a Swede - was replying to WildHobgoblin - who, I assume, is a German.

Possibly, at least I kind of understood what you were saying without actually knowing how to speak Swedish ;) But it's usually easier with written language, I think... same goes for Danish and Dutch, in writing it's understandable, but when people talk I am lost.

I feel pretty much the same, except that I have a real hard time even with written swedish. Bokmål norwegian, danish & dutch I can somewhat understand in writing, but swedish just looks weird to me.

The Icelandic helps a little, maybe, since some words are somewhat similar to other "northern languages".
Swedish sounds nice, though, a little singsong-y. French also has a nice ring to it ;) I learned Latin at school, still kind of regret I didn't take French instead, since it's far more likely I'll travel there some time than that I'll travel back in time to meet some good ole' Romans...

Icelandic is hard for me even though is the language that is closest related to Faroese.
