I'm starting to try to write more reviews on GOG games for my site, and one of my quirks about doing so is that I like to take my own screenshots. Usually I use a combo of Fraps and the built in Steam screenshot key depending on the game, but I've been having a lot of issues with older games; I.E. most of GOG. Obvious many of these games don't work with the Steam overlay, and a lot of them have severe issues with Fraps, which as I understand doesn't work unless you're playing a game with Direct3D or something like that. I can't even do the printscreen copy/paste method, because my laptop lacks a printscreen key (I have to use the onscreen keyboard if I want to try).

Anyway, I've been mostly solving this on a game by game basis, but it would be nice to have a universal solution for the many older games I need to screencap thoroughly. I figured if anyone knew it would be this forum. So any suggestions?

Most people serious about this kind of thing set up a hardware DVR layer, basically they steal a feed right off their DVI cable and run it to separate hardware. Here's a very expensive, pre-done solution:

http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1445-Definition-Personal-Recorder/dp/B005P5UMVM/ref=br_lf_m_1000741551_1_10_ttl?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&pf_rd_p=1330784222&pf_rd_s=center-10&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_i=1000741551&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0F9PYNVQKHPYRP9BQRVG

But you can hack anything you want up on your own, you just need a mini computer sitting between that's fast enough to pass through the signal and grab a screenie (an old laptop should work). You'll have to look for some FOSS software to help you out, I'd be shocked if you couldn't find some, though.
If the game uses DOSBox, just press Ctrl+F5 to take a screenshot. The imagfes will be saved to the "capture" folder.

I also used a program called "ZScreen" a while ago, and it worked pretty well.

ZScreen does the trick once it's properly configured. It's not fast, but it's workable.

Thanks.
