I am a big fan of the Paradox games, Bullfrog games, the Civ games, Dominion 3, MOO2, KODP and Imperialism.
I loved the old game Machiavelli, which I think was similar. I got that over a year ago and played if for about two months straight..Maybe I should give it another go... But I would still like to pick up a new game.

I second that! With a stronger emphasis on Patrician 3 because it doesn't contain silly mini-games like DANCING (I'm serious!) which are frustrating like hell!

Editing to stay on topic, I'm seconding startopia. That game is bullfrog-class fun.

There are 2 games in particular that come to my attention.

The first is darwinia and the second king of dragon pass that has been mentioned before. I am a little surprised that no one has mentioned darwinia as yet. It's a bloody amazing game albeit slightly quirky....but quirky good.

Startopia would also make for an excellent purchase IMO.
