Born2Hula: That said, the last good strategy I played was Dawn of War 1. Company of Heroes would count, but it's basically a reskinned DOW (not a bad thing, given how amazing DOW was). I'm an old-school rts'er, I like bases and tech trees. I almost hated DOW for automating resource harvesting. I don't understand why new RTS's are desperate to throw off those old cliches.
It wasn't desperate, Relic just approached their project giving some thought to it. You really would have preferred Wacraft 3 with Warhammer 40k models and names? Dropping the resource gathering and replacing it with fighting for tactical/strategic positions is what made the game original and worth playing, IMO. And as for Company of Heroes - sure, at the first glance it feels like DoW in WW2 but believe me, it's not. My brother played it a online a lot and basically provided me with his analysis of the gameplay, tactics etc. - and when approaching the game more seriously you see that they are very different, actually. It's like saying that Panzer General is the same thing as Battle Isle, only in WW2.
You should still read some of the previous posts, especially since already the second answer got it right.
