Back in the mid-to-late '90s I used to have a "joystick" controller from Interact that was called something like a "racing wheel controller". No, it was not a steering wheel per se. It did not mount on your desk: you held it in your hand.

You held the body of the controller in one hand (left for me) and there was a small rubber wheel mounted on the other side, that you worked with your other hand (right). It had some buttons on it, of course, but I forget the configuration. I used to love</span> that controller! I remember playing games like Powerslide and Ultim@ate Race Pro with that controller.

I also remember playing the original Mafia, and when you got to that mission where you had to race around the race track I could NOT DO IT with the keyboard. I must have replayed that mission 20 times before remembering that Interact controller. So I plugged it in and I immediately won the race on my very next attempt!

But I think that controller was the oldschool pre-USB type, that used to plug into your soundcard! Remember how soundcards used to have a D-sub connector for plugging in joysticks or MIDI sound modules? Ah, those were the days... not all of them good. Joystick calibration through those input ports was a major headache, for developers and gamers alike.

Anyway, the question is... does anybody make a similar controller for today's PCs? I have an "ok" steering wheel controller I bought last year... a Thrustmaster Ferrari GT. Despite costing only $39 it's a HIDEOUS MONSTER that takes up waaaay too much space, both on your desk and on the floor with the foot controls (although I don't need the foot controls). I'd love to find something like that old Interact you could just hold in your hands, but assuming that one was pre-USB I can't plug it into my PC anymore.

If you have any suggestions for SMALL handheld controllers with a wheel for driving, I'd love to hear about it! The Interact was about the size of today's TV remote controls. I suspect there are R/C cars and trucks that probably have a similar controller.

Thrustmaster has a gamepad equpped with wheel (optical technology - should be acurate).
here is an example - I saw also non-licenced (cheaper) versions

Yes, it sounds very much like a common type of R/C car controller. I don't think I've ever seen one like that for a PC. The closest I've been able to find is this old thing made for the PS1.

I found this from hspracing.com, but I don't know of how much help that is to you.
There's also RCJoyCon, which seems to make it possible to use a real RC controller with the computer.

I bought the Thrustmaster Ferrari F430 Wireless gamepad off Amazon and it arrived today. I chose that over the HKS Racing controller because the TM pad works with both PS3 and PC, and it's wireless. Supposedly the HKS (PS3 only) will work with PC if you download a utility program, but I didn't want to fool with that.

My first impression... it's nowhere near as smooth and nice as my old Interact UltraRacer. The gamepad is very light and everything falls under my fingers just fine. But the optical control (steering wheel) is quite stiff. I tried working it like they recommend, with the left thumb. But the problem is... you have to lift your thumb off the wheel and set it down on the other side of this plastic "tab" that sticks out when you want to change directions. The tab is like where the 6 o'clock position would be on a steering wheel, and your thumb rests on one side or the other, "pushing" against the tab to turn the wheel. I tried resting my thumb ON the plastic tab, but this was quite uncomfortable and my thumb kept slipping off.

I also tried turning the wheel with my righthand, after mapping the brake/accel to my left forefinger. This is almost exactly like the old UltraRacer worked, and using this technique I immediately won my first race (Dirt 2). But once again, the wheel is so stiff and small compared to the UltraRacer's larger and smoother wheel, that my fingers felt cramped while turning it. Not comfortable.

So maybe I'll get used to it, or maybe the stiffness of the wheel will relax over time. I may also dig around in the garage and see if I can find the old wheelpad. I loved it so much (at the time) that I bought TWO and never opened the 2nd one... but I can't find either one right now! I'd have to get an analog-to-USB joystick converter to use it on today's PCs, but it might just be the best solution.

I just had a thought... maybe I should just break that tab off (or sand it down) so it's not in the way? That might work... but there's no going back! :)
