Navagon: No, I was talking about HL2 still not having the concluding EP3. Which is approximate to Black Mesa not having Zen.
Oh all right then, just wanted to be sure. I'm missing a lot of jokes today.
On a vaguely related note - When and if I have a space free in my busy gaming schedule for an FPS should I go for
Opposing Force (having played HL and Blue Shift years ago)
Star Wars: Dark Forces
FEAR
or Painkiller: Black Ed?
I'm thinking Opposing Force because it's probably the shortest although you guys seem to be saying that its significantly longer than Blue Shift?
Cheers

Opposing Force might possibly be better than Half Life, if you can forget for a moment that Force wouldn't exist without HL to begin with. It's simply a fantastic game, because it's Half Life with a useful group of soldiers supporting/helping you.

It's that good.

Opposing Force is a great game but it is still a HL game so while fun it's not an entirely new FPS experience. I'd go Painkiller if for no other reason than it's different with a different storey, baddies, and a nice twisted hell vibe. It's not the best FPS out there but it is unique. If you are a Star Wars freak (like me) you might try Dark Forces, but it is sooooo old and you really need to love your retro for it to be worth your while. There are much better SW FPS titles out there that aren't that pricey.

Fever_Discordia: ...
Well it depends. Painkiller would be an excellent choice if you just want to shoot stuff. If you want an atmospheric shooter with some story tacked on it, FEAR is the way to go.

Fenixp: Why would anyone recommend Half-Life: Source? It's just prettier water and ... Well, as I read here, better ladders. It's far better to get HL: Anthology, which also comes with both expansions, which are brilliant. Pretty water has nothing on Opposing Force.

Tallima: I have the whole anthology (I really got Half-Life Complete). I read the expansions were stand-alones so I could still play those after I played the first in source.

If all I'm getting are ladders, ragdoll and water with source, then I think I'll go with the original. Source sounds like it has nice stuff in it, it just doesn't have cohesion. And cohesion is important.

Thanks again for all your help.
Agreed. I think visual cohesiveness is something a lot of people ignore, and I find it to be even more important than the technical fidelity. Which is why I seldom go for graphical "updates" to older engines (with a few exceptions).

Also, because like you I put a lot of value on experiencing the original designer's intentions.
Thanks for your opinions - I really didn't know much about Painkiller and FEAR other than they're FPSes that are meant to be quite good, feel I know a bit more now...

Garugo: I'd go with Half-Life: Source first (the original version doesn't hold up quite as well), then Black Mesa. Black Mesa is missing a portion of the game right now, but you can always play that after they release it as an update or standalone.
Only downside to HL:S is that they substituted gibs with ragdoll. Why can't we have both, dammit? (and BM:S scratches that particular itch, so...)
