TheCheese33: Was the movie good? It sounds like it would be interesting to watch!

PoSSeSSeDCoW: I remember hearing about the people making it, but I don't remember the movie's name. Sorry. Doing a quick google search, I think I've found it.
The movie's name is Colin. http://mashable.com/2009/05/23/colin/

Neat feel-good story!

CaptainGyro: I guess I saw the thread title and was expecting some amazingly original/creative script as the reason the guy got an offer, not just because of special effects.
If it was unique original writing, I'd probably say "wow I'd really like to see what that guy does with a full lenght movie".

Mnemon: But ... given that there are people doing real amazing stuff with CG in their spare time, I'd have thought that there'd be more .... promising talents out there to hand $30 million to. People that actually push what can be done with CG, rather than copying the way Block Busters use CGI.

Guys... we're talking Hollywood here. An original / creative script or pushing a technology could have gotten him 10k on some great, but rather unknown short film festivals, but millions?
If James Cameron gets 300 millions for a Pocahontas in space, I'd say that guys right on track.
well the title of the thread said "Makes it big" not "gets hired for 30 million" which is why I said I came to that conclusion after the thread title. "makes it big" could mean a significantly less amount of money.
It' can't be that hard to find a bunch of people willing to do that stuff for free. A short CL ad in most major US cities would have a bunch of people lining up for a chance to be extras in a disaster movie-styled music video.

Nice film, though it's main charm *IS* it's low budget...ergo, a hollywood version will defeat it's own point.

Beautiful. They don't even need a story and the movie will do well. Just look at another film that has just come out very recently...
