PaterAlf: Anyone played
Legends of Dawn and can tell something about it? I just looked at Metacritic.com and saw that it had disastrous scores and reviews when it came out. Did it change for good (because of patches and updates) or is it still that bad?
Out of interest in what appears to be a great game that I'd enjoy, I did research some months ago.
Here's my understanding of Legends of Dawn:
1) It was released buggy as hell (think: Gothic 3, Daggerfall, and
Two Worlds).
2) It was released on Steam without the "Early Access Game" label (in other words, no "this is beta" warning) even though it was in its alpha stage as far as players were concerned.
3) Kickstarter backers were messed over since Steam buyers got it first and extras from the kickstarter are still being waited on.
4) It's for "hardcore" RPG players who prefer absolutely no hand holding (reading the manual is highly recommended)
5) Some people have been fortunate enough to be able to play through the entire game without horrible experiences with bugs, crashes, or performance issues.
I've been waiting for Legends of Dawn to go on sale again. It's the only reason why I bought the Be Mine X bundle. And now to kick back and wait for patch 1.08.
Its last patch (1.07) was in August.
This type of game is not for everyone. It will not hold you by the hand and tell you where to go, much is left for you to discover and figure out for yourself. This game takes a very precious commodity: patience.
If you like an open world and the opportunity to figure things out for yourself. If you like old school isometric games, and if you like exploring every nook and cranny, then this game might be up your alley.
It was designed and marketed for a specific audience, and the developers know full well - and admit - that many many people will not like this game. The choice to not spell things out for the player and to have them discover things on their own was a deliberate decision on their part.
Here is a quote form one of the members of the dev team from steam forums that elaborates the above point:
"We understand that some people do not like [the lack of quest markers] and believe it's a failing on our part to not design the game that way, but it was, in fact, a very intentional design choice. We didn't create Legends of Dawn to appeal to everyone, and that's totally fine with us if people don't enjoy the way the game is designed.
We do care when people who are interested in our game and the design choices and understand what style of game we're trying to present find the game unenjoyable. We're working very hard to ensure that these people, the ones who are excited about a more hardcore experience, truly enjoy Legends of Dawn".
The more I play the game, the more I like it, despite its current rough state, but from what feedback I have read the devs are working hard to polish this gem up for their core audience. Plus there are plans of releasing -what appear to be- powerful mod tools to the community in the future.
My recommendation is one of three things:
1) Get the game if it sounds like something you would like, releasing it may feel like you are playing a beta for the time being
2) Wait a few weeks and see how it gets patched up
both 1 and 2 assume you have the aforementioned patience. If you do not then there is option 3) realize you are not the targeted audience and give the game a pass.

This game had a lot of potential. But it won't live up to that potential unless the developers fix things that the players have been frothing about since release.
First, this game is horribly unoptimized. Even on the lowest settings on a good computer, it still runs like crap. Gameplay feels slow, stuttered and clunky. This should be the priority for fixes. The players are basically beta testers for a product that was released without having standard functionality.
The inventory system is bad. Items only stack x5, which sucks. You'll have half a bag full of the same item in stacks of 5. Simply raise the number of items that a stack can hold. 100 would be a good number, if not infinite. And let EVERYTHING stack if it's the same damn item. Another inventory annoyance is that you'll have multiple items, that are the same item, yet won't stack because they are priced differently based on some quality that is hidden. So, another waste of inventory space that is unnecessary and just becomes an annoyance.
The list goes on, and others have stated other issues in detail that I won't belabor. But suffice to say, this game needs a lot of work.
As it stands as of patch V1.06, this game is just a bargain bin title that isn't worth the $19.99 that it's currently going for on Steam. As of right now, it really should be going for under $10 unless the developers are putting a lot more work into it really fast.

Yes for the most part it's actually a good game despite what alot of other people say. I think that there were just a few graphic glitches I experienced but I was able to play the game without it crashing. Things like the terrain disappearing and taking slightly longer to appear happened but I think they can easily fix those things. I think I will play it on a different difficulty next time
