oldschool: There is only one problem, at the $18 dollar donation level they say DRM free, but that digital D/L is available off of Steam? Don't they know that Steam is just another form of DRM.
"But before i decide to support or buy anything, i would like to know if you are planning any versions of the game and expansions that -once downloaded- is able to install and run on a machine that is offline?"

That was one of the questions i mailed to Crate. This and the fact he wrote they might distribute through gog is, as i see it a guarantee that it is going to be truly drm-free.

But your concern is valid, and i'm thinking of writing to crate again, to make sure that the game will come in a 100 percent steam, etc. free variant.

Good news,
Now i got the reply from Arthur Bruno at Crate Entertainment:

Hi,

Steam is totally optional. As it says on the KS page, you can download it directly from us and don't have to bother with Steam at all. Some people hate Steam and I actually used to be one of them but some fans love it and wanted to make sure we release on it. Steam exists for those people.

Another thing to realize though is that Steam offers different levels of DRM to publishers / developers and it is optional what you enable for your game. If you don't enable any DMR with Steam, then Steam is just a way to pay for, download the game and get updates. Steam also provides various services players enjoy and it does offer multiplayer match-making. You don't even have to run Steam to play the game in that case.

I'm not trying to sell Steam or any other service, we actually make significantly more money if you buy directly from us instead of through Steam or GoG. I'm just trying to explain that our purpose in providing it as an option is by player request, not because we're trying to control the way people use the game at all. It would make no sense to offer a totally DRM free, direct download from our website and then have a version on Steam with DRM.

You can play the game single player with no internet connection or anything else required and you play LAN. However, we can't afford to build our own multiplayer match-making system, so we have to rely on other providers, which is part of the reason we're planning to release on Steam. I don't know if GoG provides that service but I know there are some other companies out there that do if people want to play multiplayer on the internet but don't want to install Steam.

Hope that answers your question.

Best,
Arthur

I do not think you gentlemen can get a more thorough answer than that. The software comes in a totally steam independant version too.

Now head over to kickstarter and pledge some more ;)

Thanks for chasing this up for us mate:). Ill increase my pledge over the next few days. Going to be awesome this game!!!
So, other than nijuu, is there anyone else in the Oceania region backing this? Most people in my region are hyped up over Diablo 3, and I'm looking for people to play GD with.
I'm hoping to back them $50 or $85.. just need to make sure I'll actually have money on the day the Kickstarter finishes.
23 days to go, now less than 100000$ left for this project to get its funding. The goal is getting closer.

Now for 3$ less than the price of the early access version you can get:

"A $32 co-op bundle tier that offers a special low-price for those just looking to pick up an extra copy of Grim Dawn." *snip*

Allrighty - More bang for the buck - and another reason to support this project ;)
Looks interesting! It will allow standard Mouse+Keyboard controls, right? The gameplay video looks like it was using a gamepad.

It is the same manner as Titan Quest and Diablo2, as far as i know.

You navigate with the mouse, and are able to assign weapons, pots, etc. to the number keys for quick use.

You could try to ask Arthur Bruno about gamepad support.
Now it looks like that Grim Dawn will get some large backing:

I can confirm that I have talked to Serge through email and he is ready to contribute an additional $100k to the project. Since he was offering to transfer the money outside of Kickstarter (KS limits pledges to $10k) I felt that it would be best to ensure that we reached our goal first. Although we look to be on a good path to reach our goal, should something go wrong, we wouldn't want to be in a position where we've accepted a large contribution like that and do not have the rest of the funding necessary to deliver what we've promised, when we've promised it. I'm confident that we will reach $280k in the remaining 23 days though and, once we do, Serge's additional funds will be a huge benefit to the project.

-Crate Entertainment

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to the posters at kickstarter, Serge "is a senior consultant with IBM".

So with the current pace, it is realistic to hope for more than $400000 in total funds before the time runs out.
I can only hope that Crate get even more serious funding between their hands.

An additional $100000 funds? - Yessir, Thankyou, Sir! ;)

'Serge' must love TQ .Man $100K to splash around.Awesome!!!
My gosh, why isn't this game already funded. I'm also astonished that a publisher didn't pick this game up months ago. It seems like a safe bet commercially. aRPGs are still hot property.
