I just bought my first laptop, a used Gateway 17 inch for $100, which was a steal. It seems stable enough, battery holds a charge, etc, etc.

It has a green line down the screen on the left. Can this be fixed, or would I have to replace the screen?

Based on what little past experience I have... I'd say either part of the connection to the screen is buggered or the screen itself is buggered. Either way, I'm fairly sure it's a hardware fault and requires replacing something.

What sort of place did you buy it used from?

Private. Again, for my needs, the line is all but inconsequential. I am just curious if it can be fixed easily. I barely notice it, and the price was amazing for what I got.

That's my guess. My current laptop does something like that from time to time. I'm guessing that in my case the poor quality of power here in China messed something up.

EDIT: It happened nearly a year ago and hasn't gotten any worse, so you might get lucky and have it not get any worse, or at least not for a long time.

That's my hope Hedwards, that it stays as-is. The girl seemed to take good care of it, and I am estatic to have it. It is actually the first computer I bought for myself, so it's kindof a big deal.

It's not going to run a ton of games, though I believe I can play Half Life 2.
I had that on an older laptop of mine and it turned out to be a motherboard failure (structural damage).

Obviously, I don't really know, but in my case I haven't seen any evidence of it being a progressive problem. You could probably have it fixed, but that might require replacing the laptop's monitor. Which is definitely possible, but may or may not be cost effective.
To rule out a motherboard or graphic card problem, print something and see if the line is still there. If not, it's probably just a monitor issue. If you can't print, I guess you could take a screenshot and see if the line is there when you resize the image. EDIT: Actually, the best way is to connect your laptop to an external monitor, if you have one at hand.

Did the person who sold you the laptop mention that line? In any case, good luck. Hopefully it'll stay like that for a long time.

They did not over the phone, I mentioned it when I got there and saw it. If it stays as-is and doesn't get any worse, I will be satisfied.
