Hi
some suggestions for the GOG wishlist.
1 remove the most voted by community list. It's self perpetuating. Everyone will just vote for the topmost 10 games over and over again. It's kind of a false result coz the 10 most voted games will get the most visibility and get more votes which will make the list static forever. Game number 11 - 10000 will never get a chance to be voted for simply because they are much less visible.
Instead I suggest a "newest added and most voted for this month" list which would give more variety.
2 unify game listings. there are multiple entries for the same game over and over. it would be good to unify these and merge the votes. you don't have to do it yourself. Just implement a 'unify' function and let people suggest which entries to unify. If enough people (10+) say that two items are the same they probably are. gog won't have to do anything extra. community power.
3 give the ability to browse the game listings, by genre, or title, or votes, etc .. there are games that I would like to vote for but that I can't think of at the moment. but when i do see them listed i might remember them and want to vote for them.
4 give some indication if our votes count for anything. System Shock 2 is the top listing but for legal reasons GOG might not be able to add it. maybe GOG can give some indication which wished games are realistic and which are not.
5 let GOG users help. just an idea but if enough users contact a publisher/owner with a request to have the game on GOG maybe they will be convinced. Alternatively give a 'pre-order' option for games that are still not on GOG. If a publisher sees that there are 3000 users willing to immediatly pay and buy their game on GOG, that might be a better incentive than "You should offer your game on GOG coz GOG is really cool .. and you'll see, people will buy it ... err .. we really really hope". It also gives GOG a more realistic indication. It's easy to 'vote' for a game. it's more serious when you vote with your $$
just some suggestions :) Let's discuss or add to them.
regards,
Shadi
Yeah, the current top 10 are problematic. I doubt GOG will get those anytime soon. Their high visibility ensures they get a disproportionate amount of votes, preventing them falling out of the top 10. Without any change in the list, there's no feeling of progress to excite users.
Hmmm ...
1. I think they should display the chart separately and display the top 100. That should help reduce the number of people who are voting for those games simply because they're there.
2. They've only got so many staff members. If they pay much heed to it at all, I'm sure they just add all the relevant votes together anyway.
3. That would require that people state the genre when they vote. That could cause further problems regarding your second point.
4. Simply: they can't. For many reasons.
5. I doubt spamming publishers has a genuinely positive impact.
I think they should expand the recent vote list on the Community main page. It only shows the last two votes, but it'd be nice to see the last 10 or 20. It'd help give people some ideas of games they'd like to vote for.
Why can't people search Steam or brick & mortar stores before they ask for certain games. Like Age of Empires 1-3 can still be found at BestBuy. Fallout3 Can be found at BestBuy,Steam,Gamestop,etc... A lot of these games you can find online fixes to run them on Win7 64bit.
Well, for one thing: I don't do Steam. As do quite a number of GOGers, I reckon.
I think the list should constantly randomized and moved, otherwise everyone is going to vote for "system shock" and "Monkey Island" while other underrated titles get left behind

Some people want the games disc- and DRM-free, perhaps?
And on a similar note, why can't people look at the last post date before necroing a two-and-a-half-year-old thread that is very much obsolete? The wishlist has been replaced.

The brick & mortar stores around here are horrible. BestBuy? We don't have that. Gamestop? We do have that, I hope you enjoy used Xbox360 & PS3 titles (because they don't do PC, other than WOW and possibly Diablo 3). Usually I have to order from abroad if I want something other than the latest and the mundane.
