paulcmnt: I get the impression that user reviews on GOG are a bit more positive than on the rest of the internet. Most of the games really are good, but there are some that were pretty mediocre when they came out and they still got four stars from GOG users. Does anyone else feel the same?

tinyE: When you look at the reviews do you read just the 1st few or do you skip to last page? The last page is where all the bad ones are.

Also, for me anyway, if I pay 2.39 or 4.99 for a game and it sucks it's still hard for me to give it a negative review. When I fork over $50 for a major let down THEN my reviews will get nasty.
The last page is where all the spam advertisements and people who couldn't get the game to run are.

AFnord: I think that it is, at least in part, due to people buying & reviewing games that they have nostalgic ties to.
yeah, I'm pretty sure people gravitate towards the games they like/d and so there's a bias towards good ratings and reviews.

buktu: I disagree about nostalgia, etc. -- the most unrealistically generously rated games on GOG are the newer ones. La Mulana (2012), Spacechem (2011), Machinarium (2009), FTL (2012), Primordia (2012), Witcher 2 (2011) have 5/5. Those are very good games of course, but do they really deserve max rating?
I haven't played much of the others, but Spacechem is by far the best puzzle game that I've played, so in my opinion, it easily earns 5 stars.

Yeah, all of those games are pretty much at the top of their respective genres, which is what 5 starts means, isn't it?
I don't care much for the star rating, I like to read some reviews fully through however (although some users like to post entire books for reviews) and that will usually give me the gist of a game. With a site like this, nostalgia is going to be a major factor when making reviews. If anyone knows of ZeroPunctuation, Yahtzee said one thing in his DeusEx review about there being tons of people familiar with the first hour of the game because they played it through once when it came out and liked it. Now, blinded by nostalgia, they want to play their childhood favorite through again, and love it for a bit, only to realize how far gaming has come. Not that the games on here are bad, but I feel no nostalgia towards them and can tire quickly of some (My mother was very conservative while I was young, the only game I had was an old Sonic Genesis collection for PC)
No, GOG USERS are too generous. :P
