I just wanted to briefly chat about a beauty that resides in old 2D games, not all mind you, just a select few .. but enough to make their mark. For when done well, they are outstanding additions to your gaming history. Something to be treasured.
Not that there's anything wrong with seeking quality graphics or anything, it's perfectly normal to want your game to look good, esp since you paid for it. But sometimes a thing looks good long after it's sell by date. And to quote a line from a review I read on here ( some adoring fans on here .. and I can see why ), that went something like 'these old 2D graphics looked better, they had more charm!
I guess, in a nutshell, I just don't want anyone missing out on some true classics. Some, like fine wine, have got even better with time. It's a gamer's haven I tell you. And the good news is, there's plenty more classics still out there yet!!!
Anyway, here's why I think they should be played ..
Number 1 .. You just might click in a heartbeat what ya missing out on. Instant enlightenment!
Number 2 .. If you look at some of the graphics, esp say the decent 2D dungeon crawlers. You just might see true artistic prowess , esp when you consider they had to work with restricted graphics and yet still make the game look good.
Number 3 .. They were often deeper, richer, thus leaving a greater impact on the gamer. It's not a real dragon unless it's rock hard to kill.
Number 4 .. The old RPGs had story and loot and many secrets. They were compelling.
Number 5 .. They lasted longer, more gameplay for the buck, and quality sometimes actually got better towards the end of the game. Not something you see today.
Number 6 .. They are part of our gaming history that set standards they may last far into the future.
Number 7 .. And I'll stop here ...... They are fun .. addiction often being the key word. They have left a trail of countless hours of lost sleep to many a keen and avid gamer.
If all that makes perfect sense, then enjoy your gaming, cos it's a little bit of heaven, here on Earth!
