Not getting a "good news" vibe at all. This genuinely is good news and has potential benefits even for people who don't intend to use the client (like me), since it opens the door for titles that previously couldn't be released on the service.

Who knows? This combined with the Pillars of Eternity release could end up encouraging Paradox to release their own titles here.
so its not "always online DRM"

but "online should you really feel the need to be online not-DRM"

something like this?
Hmm... I'm not a doomsayer in terms people who don't understand the optional aspect, but I see another problem comming and it would be cool, if GOG has an answer to that:

Is Galaxy going to support actual older games. The old games are often using a 32bit network protocol, which you can emulate with for example hamachi. Are you making sure that each game in your catalogue is actually playable in multiplayer on Galaxy?
If *yes* how much human ressources will you have to spend on that? Is a price increase comming?
If "no", what's the point of the cross-multiplayer anyway when there's almost no games to use it with?

For newer games, the interest is obvious : being able to play with people on steam.
For older games, if they don't work on steam, no need of cross platforming to begin with ; if they work on steam .... same reason as before?

Not sure I am following your second point?

But your question is clearly interesting : should we expect some kind of virtual networking (like hamachi), some lobby thing like gameranger ... or what ?

Fallen_Zen said that only games that support GOGGalaxy will be able to take advantage of it. So it seems like it will be a network API developers can use, similar to Gamespy and/or Steamworks. It may be possible to be added to DOSBox, so any DOSBox using games can take advantage of it, and depending on implementation, the GOG wrapper many games use may also be able to take advantage of it. But if you have a game that cannot work with a wrapper and used a weird network protocol, it may not be able to use GOGGalaxay.

My second point is, that if Galaxy is effectively just a better downloader for old games, but not a multiplayer support for them, it requires GOG to sell more new games that means going in direct concurence to steam and origin. So we're to expect more new games to GOG next year. Also combinded with their local prizing "refund" policy and their quality controls, it's gonna be a hard time for steam, at least in Europe. Imagine when you can buy a game on steam or you buy it on GOG, get better service and also another game of your choice. It's a clear win for GOG then, but only if they're going for the new releases.
That means we're either getting better support for older games or a paradigm shift with gog reguarding what they sell.
Also I predict the "optional" thing will get a revision. I predict that if Galaxy prooves itself to be a working multiplayer platform, Indie devs that are developing multiplayer titles, will want to get onto Galaxy as well. So if there's a multiplayer only title, to that title, Galaxy obviously has to be mandatory. Then it'll be interesting how they handle DRM and account binding.

By declining the game, like they (reluctantly) did with Planetary Annihilation I'd guess.
Not actually this time. Sure, it'll probably have kinks, but with how well the GOG downloader has gone, I feel this could be a nice step.
i see, this is the thread where we get some answers?..

ok,.. right now, i use the steam libary to start my good old snes games. I made a .bat file to autostart my snes games and made it to an exe, so i can add this exe to my steam libary as an Non-steam game.

Are we able to do this with gog galaxy too? ..and on top of that, do we have the same features as on steam too? (screenshots, ingame overlay, community hub for specific games, etc)

Emob78: I'll get good vibes from Galaxy when it takes Steam out to the back 40 and beats the ever lovin'dog shit out of it.

When Steam is left broken and bloody on a pile of ashes and bone, that's when I'll raise the sword of victory into the air and claim GOG sovereign lord of the digital wastelands empire.
Nutty rants like this are only going to turn new people away from GOG. Try and act normal, the public are watching.
It already seems good with that update mechanism.

I bought syndicate from origin sale and everyone has trouble activating it and it's an EA game. There usually is no trouble but now it is. Yesterday when I launched origin it's language was russian in the shop page.

Also their customer service didn't help me. They just said basic stuff and it seemed that some google translate was used or they are all robots when you are not from america.

So I'm interested about gog-client. Fun times are happening. Still, Witcher adventure game.. isn't that some card game pokemon style? My adventures are poin't and click. That's what I understand but I'm open to new things. =)

The "Optionnal" agreement give us legitimacy in lighting our pitchforks if we can't play a multiplayer game through any other contraption (hamachi, gameranger, windows live-after-death, netscape gaming hub ...). I'm exaggerating but you see the point.
