Dear Esther is more of a living story of literary and graphical artwork than a game per se. You're trapped on a presumably deserted island and alone, and as you wander around looking for what to do or where to go an intellectual story is narrated to you as to the thoughts going through your character's mind about events from the past. It has some very well done graphics, especially in the underground caves. It's definitely not a mystery type game other than that you don't know what will happen next (but in that context all games are mysteries). You just walk around and observe the nice graphic artwork on the island and listen to the narrative story until you reach the final destination. There's no interactivity or things to do, no puzzles to solve, just a couple of hours of exploring an island and taking in the audio/visual artistry.

I went through it a couple of months ago as someone recommended it as being like Miasmata. The only thing in common it has with Miasmata though is that they both take place on an island and you're lost, but Miasmata is a survival/exploration game whereas Dear Esther I'd have to say is totally different. It's more like a brand new form of audio-visual entertainment that is built using a 3D game engine. A living novel so to speak.

Anyhow if you're looking for a "game" game, you might be disappointed, but if you're looking for exploring a fairly new form of artistic expression within the framework of a 3D game engine, you might find entertaining. Myself, I thought it was an interesting new form of artistic expression overall but not something that was particularly exciting. The artwork was more appealing than the story narration to me.

In short, it is one of those things that kind of defies categorization somewhat. :)

For what it matters, *I* am in! Friends of mine have told me they like the game, and I've heard it's similar to a handful of games I've played and greatly enjoyed, so I've been eyeing bundles for it to pop up again. Alas, it hasn't since then, so here's my chance!

Let me spell it out for you: DRM-free is not the same as just free! It does not mean you are allowed to share the game with anybody else.
