Phr00t's new game has had an official v1.0 release.

It is a radical change from his earlier work, for example it starts with "It is the year 3080"...

Anyway, the game and mobs are still procedurally generated, and it is still 3D, blocky shooter-explorer game, but this time it is all inside different "generators" as opposed to fully free roaming. Phr00t describes it as a "3D Metroidvania game" and there are a much bigger focus on 3D space navigation and boss fights. As the rooms are procedural, some of them do actually become interesting spaces to navigate, it includes things like water, moving platforms, spikes and so on. It also have one of the most functional 3D maps I have seen in a 3D game.

As a first impression - for a one man show, it is not bad at all so far. It may have more game elements the 3079 hough in the end it may not have the longevity of 3079's sandbox nature. The music is quite nice also.

For those interested there are a demo on the games webpage:
http://gentrieve.wordpress.com/download-demo/

or on Desura:
http://www.desura.com/games/gentrieve-2

I kind of like it so far. (though I still think Phr00t is a silly name and he should stop using it...)

I am only really worried about one thing - phr00t seems to be horrible about post-release support for games, immediately jumping ship to another project. I'm not entirely sure everything was really fixed in 3079. Just that there weren't many patches.

Other than that, it looked interesting. But he's already talking about a new project on Twitter.

3079 has had lots of patches. In reverse order:
September 3rd
August 22nd
August 5th
July 8th
June 10th
May 12th
May 9th
April 26th
April 19th
April 18th

The changelog reaches further back than that, but you can see it's definitely been receiving post release support.
Too..many..games. OK, I will try it! Metroid series is one of my favourites so it's nice to see how got decent inspiration for this. :)

Woah, where have I been?

Thanks. Faith restored. Yeah, 3079 is really cool, I'd just had the impression he wasn't doing much with it due to the Gentrieve Kickstarter happening so soon after 3079 was released (that also begs the question of how sales were if he needed a Kickstarter that soon) and the fact that the Desura thing didn't appear to come up too often saying it needed updated.
Hope he brings it to Gamersgate. I like 3079.

Interesting, I have to try that as well. Unfortunately Gentrieve 2 freezed for me occassionally.
