I've only just seen one episode and I'm on the second, but WOW. This is some epic show. HBO miniseries, not unlike Band of Brothers, but it's set in the Iraq War, at the start of it. Based on actual events by a Rolling Stones embedded journalist it's a facsinating look at today's troops. Unlike Band of Brothers it's not instant violence and blowing stuff up but it's more to do with why they do what they do, the crazy bureaucracies involved in the Marines, and of course, the enemy.

I liked that series very much, we had a marathon about a month ago. I suggest you see it in HD with surround, totally worth it. But pay attention when they are talking, because you don't know who's who after a while.
Saying it is like "jarhead" is saying every vietnam movie is like Platoon or Apocalypse now

It's also by David Simon and Ed Burns - the two creative geniuses behind The Wire. If that doesn't sell it for you then you don't know good tele when it smacks you upside the head :).

I didn't really omg i love this until the later episodes towards the end. It is nowhere near as good as Band of Brothers though, which I think still stands as the greatest mini series to have been shown on television. And no, it has nothing to do with Jarhead, it's like what TheCowSaysMoo said, you can't just go and say two movies are similar simply for having the same setting.
The Wire is leaps and bounds above Generation Kill.

Damn good series. I agree with honorbuddy, though...not quite to the level of Band of Brothers.

Not really related, but seeing as Band of Brothers is mentioned, have folks given the Pacific a try? By the same people behind Band of Brothers, but about the conflict with the Japanese.
Haven't watched either of the programmes anyway. Wondered this morning if I'd missed the first episode of The Pacific in the UK. Hope not. Loved The Wire though. Anyway, The Pacific is one programme you may want to keep an eye out for if you liked Band of Brothers.

This is true, but my point was anything they're responsible for is worth a watch. I'm looking forward to Treme.

I have yet to watch Generation Kill, as I do like BoB. But yes, I don't expect the same impact as BoB did to the audience back then. G.K. was $30 at amazon some months ago, but I passed up and will get it in the future.
Talking about The Wire, people say it was filmed only in standard definition, so a Blu-ray release is not possible. =(
