I have recently begun using gamersgate for a couple of games. I noticed that below there download link for some games there are links for patches. Does this mean that the download link will not include an already updated installer? So i will need to download and apply the patches after installing the main download? I hope that made sense. Thank you.

Yes, if you download a game off GG a lot of the time it will be unpatched, which is no biggie if you're nostalgic and remember how to patch your games yourself ;)

Ha, its been such a long time since I have had to patch a game myself=) Darn steam, gog, origin, and gamestop from spoiling me. Thank you for the quick reply.


Oh...and I have no issues with it, just did not want to waste bandwidth if the downloads were also up to date.

There should be a version number either on the gamecard page or when you run the installer. It should be there somewhere, unless I'm mistaking GG for another service. It's been a while since I've downloaded anything off of there that required patching.

The version number is not hard to get although i believe it shows it when you start the installer but i was not paying attention

That is by far the worst excuse I've heard for piss poor customer support.

Ha...EMS...i remember when I wanted to play Wing Commander Privateer which required a certain amount of EMS...no matter what we did via boot disks, etc we could never get up to that magical number. Then we took out a freaking physical PCI card (it was an ata port card). Guess what, I could then play Privateer. The good old days of getting games to work, and people complain now.

Patches on GamersGate are not required most of the time. The base games get updated regularly. But if only the main download were updated, then everybody would need to download and install the whole thing again. So GamersGate often also offers patches, for those who have the game already. Of course, if you installed the updated main download, you don't have to install the patch.

Sometimes the main download is left at a previous version deliberately. This is a good thing in these cases. It happens mostly when the latest patch of a game is experiemental, is known to have issues, or breaks compatibility with popular mods. For me, this is a major advantage. Instead of having the latest version forced on me (like Steam does), I can choose what I want.

In some more cases, the GamersGate download may simply be outdated. If you notice such a thing, you can contact support, who will then contact the publisher. Obviously, GamersGate cannot check several thousand games if they had an update since they last got the files for them; it's the job of the publisher to send updates to the distributors. But GamersGate can (and will) try to get the latest version if you tell them that theirs isn't up to date.

Personally, I install the base game, then look if it displays a version number somewhere, then look at my GamersGate library if there is a patch, and then check the Internet if there are newer versions elsewhere.

So, if you don't mind my asking, what are your impressions of Gamersgate thus far? I've just stumbled across it within the past couple days and was considering whether or not it was worth signing up.

I actually like the fact that you get the option to patch the game yourself, at least for games with a lot of interesting mods. Patches can (and do) quite often break mod compatibility. (Sometimes fans make de-patchers for this very reason. There is for an example one for Age of Wonders)

But they are a bit inconsistent here. With some games they add a new & up to date version to the main download, and with some they don't. I guess it in the end depends on if they get supplied with the latest version by the publisher. I know that it was not me you asked, but I find Gamer's Gate to be one of the better Digital Distribution services. Much like GOG, you are not bound by a program that you need to run in the background when playing your games, and at least I usually get a very good download speed from GG (often in the 15-20mbit/s range, though I get even higher speed if I download my games at odd hours, like really early in the morning). Support is also really good, if a bit slow, and you get 5% back on all purchases in the form of blue coins, which can be spent on more games (I usually my blue coins to pay for DLC and really cheap games on sale)

This is true. SimonG often says that Paradox games have awful patching methods (and it is true, especially when you have DLCs, patches for DLCs, spritepacks and even patches for spritepacks), but on the other hand...

My Crusader Kings 2 autopached on steam lately. And the game was broken (portraits not showing up). It appeared that the problem occurs in quite a few people. My steam version was unplayable because you can't roll back changes after the game is autopached. If I had GamersGate version, I could easily play on older build and wait for the patch (they patched it few days after, but for few days my game was unplayable)

There are always upsides and downsides for everything.

So far, I have had no problem with gamersgate. Games run great, the only issue I had was with Company of Heroes and that was not a gamersgate issue but a Relic issue and it has been solved. Everything runs smoothly.
