Many other forms of entertainment have prestigious awards that are coveted in their respective industries and mean something to the general public. Music has the Grammys, movies have the Oscars, writing has the Pulitzer and TV has the Emmys. What is the top award in gaming? and if there isn't one isn't time that one came along?

I'm not really an awards fan (I rarely pay any attention to awards in the media you mention), and I really don't think gaming is yet taken seriously by the public at large, meaning a 'large scale' award would be meaningless anyway.

games are like cars every random magazine and blog has a "best in" or "game of the year" award so almost every major car or game gets one or more. lol
