Which is the better game/series? I remember as kid being scared of these when looking through the old Interaction magazines so I never ended up playing them. I'm thinking about getting one from the sale. Is there one that is clearly a must play? Thanks.

Gabriel Knight. The writing is good across all three games... unlike Phantasmagoria, which started great. And then we have the sequel...

I heard that, Curtis!

Gabriel Knight for the story and fun interactions.....Phantasmagoria for the sheer wtf moments.
There is no question here. No issue to be solved. No confusing choice.

Gabriel Knight.

NO.

STOP THINKING.

Gabriel Knight.

Do the right thing.
GK hands down.
Gabriel Knight. But Phantasmagoria is cheesy fun as well (never did play the second one though...)
I have never played Phantasmagoria (due to poor reviews), but GK1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time, out of the hundreds I've played in 20 years of active gaming.
I played "Phantasmagoria" first, I think, so I liked that more probably just for "that experience".
But I also liked GK1 and 2 .
Tim Curry is in Gabriel Knight

They really don't have much to do with eachother, they are very different games so there would be no point in trying to say what's better.

Gabriel Knight are three very serious games which mixes real historical facts with supernatural fiction to create very compelling stories. There is humor on these games but the overall tone is very serious.

Phantasmagoria on the other hand, the first one, is a ghost story as simple as they come. The game adds nothing to these kinds of stories and unfortunately it aims for terror but it ends up being completely cheesy. The game is fun in the same sense that a B-movie is fun, you just watch it because of how bad it is.

Phantasmagoria 2 though it's a much better game overall and the story is not connected to the first game, so I would recommend to at least try this one, and only playing the first if you're really curious.
