I still find it amusing that almost immediately after a game with DRM is released, the DRM is cracked and the game is pirated.

The companies have invested and spent too much money to give in and say that their DRM doesn't solve the problem. It makes more of it.

DRM really is not that much about stopping piracy, companies know that they can not stop it and any method will be cracked as it is only matter of time. What restrictive DRM is really done for is to stop used games sales as those are actual lost sales from publishers pow. That is why recently one use only online pass or restricted downloadable extras or other digital format have become popular as those can not be resold. This aspect is becoming more and more important as games become more and more disposable.

I have not played Half Life 2 (was a huge HL fan, played tons of multiplayer too, bought all the expacs, even Blue Shift) because I have to activate on Steam.
I bought Sin Chronicles not realizing it was a Steam title, did not play it.
I did not buy nor play Bioshock (I did try the XBox Live demo years after the fact).
I haven't played Spore, though it is a game I probably would have liked, even with all its flaws.
I bought DA:O on XBox, I can't recall if it was due to DRM issues, but it may have been.
I can't actually think of the last game I put up with serious DRM on my PC to play, maybe Overlord, which had SecuROM (pre activation days). Or perhaps Demigod, since it was Impulse (had credits left over from TotalGaming.Net).

I once bought a copy of GOTY Oblivion because I heard so much rave things about it but as soon I got home, I decided to browse the reviews and DRM in that game frequently come up. I was so reluctant to install that game on my computer, which I had just received so I opted to exchange it for bunch of DVDs.
I very rarely purchased modern PC games because of DRM, although I do have sizable collection in my Steam account but they tend to be older titles. There's a lot of interesting titles that I would like to buy but DRM alone is final nail in the coffin for me so it's no go.
Hence, that's why I tend to play older titles so I'm not concerned about DRM and all that stuff.
I owned a copy of Starcraft 2 but that's because my friend really want me to play with him so badly that he bought me the copy so I play it. However, I disliked the form of DRM in that game, even if I do enjoy some aspects of that game.
It's a shame that DRM is like plague for me because I sincerely want to support the developers and interesting games. So that's why I tend to frequent GoG so I can play older titles without any concern for DRM.

Too often, one of my friends would lag so badly that it interrupt the flow the game. Had they actually put in LAN support, this wouldn't have happen at all.
It's very frustrating for me to deal with this issue and I tried to convince my friends to play Starcraft 1 so we wouldn't have to deal with this problem but they declined and opted to favor SC2, which is a shame. I think SC1 is really balanced as hell, compared to SC2, in my own opinion.

I came to this conclusion when I played the demo. However at launch, there was a lot of fanfare over "spiritual successor to SS2", so I actually would have bought it for full price at launch, if they had not had the activation requirement.

^ never had a problem with SC2, with the regular log in, or in offline mode. Unlike Steam, here the offline mode actually works. Also, so far, I haven't found the need for LAN support.
And the game doesn't install any DRM on your machine, everything is done server-side. Battle.Net is pretty much the only DRM I accept, since it has never gotten in my way (yet, I guess).
I understand why some people don't want to buy it, though.
EDIT: SC2 now has a demo that allows you to play the first three missions, and against the AI in skirmish mode.

I played System Shock 2 for the first time a few years after I'd given up on BioShock (I got about halfway through BS, and gave up from boredom). System Shock 2 pisses all over BioShock.

Anyway, suffice it to say that the chances of me ever buying another Blizzard game are so low it's just not funny.
Of course, having said all that, I'm genuinely glad you've had nothing but a good experience. Just my luck, really. The one exception I make, and it confirmed just about every fear and problem I have with DRM...
Err... sorry for the little rant :-)

i'm definitely not a fan of DRM, but i've installed some of that action recently (securom, gfwl) because i really wanted to play a game.
honestly, i enjoy steam's own implementation, and that's as far as i typically accept. GOG's stance on DRM is one reason i love this site. i'd spend a lot more money here if i had a lot more money to spend.

You create an offline account and there you go, no reason to be online anytime, not even for making an account like Steam requires.
i have an xbox 360, and i'm a paying gold member. so, when i installed dawn of war ii, i used my already existing membership. move forward a bit, and now i'm playing batman: aa, which i bought on steam but still uses securom AND gfwl. i actually don't mind having two overlays, and the securom, while annoying, hasn't caused me any issues. why a game needs THREE separate forms of DRM is beyond me.
the issue comes when my wife turns on the 360 while i'm playing, multiple login is detected, and i am immediately booted from my game. a console and a pc should be able to log in independently of each other.
that's my annoyance with gfwl. it's small, but it's there.
if you bothered to check out any steam thread involving a gfwl game, you would easily see why people hate it.

Worst idea ever! Wtf made them think this was a good idea (other than the fact that MS wishes whole families would buy Gold accounts for everyone - even that they've relented on with family packs)?
