Some of the most fun I have had in FTL is when I am not winning.

It can get repetitive, sure, but so far no other game has matched the feeling I get when frantically trying to save my ship as things suddenly, and often all at once, start to go horribly wrong.

It's the kind of game I play in spurts. Too much and the repetition does get boring, but when the mood strikes, I have a ton of fun with it.

Now, if someone could combine FTL with Star Control 2, I'd likely not get much sleep for a while.
Every playthrough is different, you get to use different weapons, crew and stuff. And the learning curve is very long, after about 50 games I can now win every single time with most ships (and some other asy ones) ships. So now the fun is a bit gone, because its too easy. Its just not much fun when you know you will win without any problems.
Overall one of the best games in the recent years. A very unique and fresh one, too.
I also play the FTL in spurts, but really I'm that way with any game. I would say there is repetitiveness in the encounters and events, but no game is the same as the last. There is enough variety that you can't guarantee you can build your ship and crew the same way every game.
FTL was meant to be repetitive in a way. It's supposed to be an arcade-style game: it's all about getting the high score. And off-hand I can't think of any arcade games that's not short and repetitive. If you don't like arcade games, then you probably won't like FTL.
There is a Star Trek mod if you are that bored.

Awe, after reading the reviews, it seemed quite good. I Really don't like playing games just for a score. I hope there is more content and variation than it sounds.

keeveek: it gets tiring pretty fast. It's a good game to play once a week, but not on regular basis.

Starmaker: I had the exactly opposite experience with repetitive roguelikes. I played FTL without regard for food and advanced hygiene and thought it to be the most genius game ever (marred by balance issues, but whatever) until I won and got supremely bored.
Agreed. My opinion is there is a huge 'reserve' of fun which doesn't replenish in this game. Exploring/discovering this game is great ... but that's just it.

grimwerk: When I first saw FTL, I thought of this. It's a puzzle game of sorts.
Totally agree. FTL is a puzzle game. The puzzle that has been posed to you is "How will you keep THIS ship alive?" The answer changes from early to mid-game and from mid-game to late-game, and is also very different for reach ship type. The game punishes you pretty mercilessly until you finally figure out a "trick" to keep that ship alive, at which point it becomes almost too easy.

So yeah, once you've "solved" all the puzzles the game does lose a lot of its oomph, but the same is true of all puzzle games. I got way more than my money's worth before I felt I'd sucked all the marrow out of this one.

I don't like aiming for the high score, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it. Have about 24 hours in it in 3 days.

I didn't mean to imply FTL is a pure arcade game. I was saying arcade games are all about getting the high score, and FTL has an arcade style. That's a major aspect of the game, but they are other aspects, of course. Obviously there's that also Rogue aspect with the randomly generated world, so it's not about memorization and patterns.

FTL is repetitive in the sense that you have to do multiple playthrough to get the most out of the game. But as for those playthroughs being the same or similar each time, that has not been my experience (after 4-5 playthroughs).

You can definitely put a lot of time into the game if you're interested in unlocking and playing with the other ships. But I agree with other sentiments from this thread whereas it can get quite repetitive. I've played the game in bursts and then dropped it for some time. I still enjoy to boot it up every now and then and I've got 52 hours played. Also the music is fantastic :)

StingingVelvet: All indie games are amazing. What are you, racist?
I'm not racist, some of my best friends are indies.

I just think that taken as a whole they are low on content, high on nostalgia, and somewhat pretentious. :P
Well, they needed 10k dollars to finish FTL but they got 200k

I don't want to know how that game was supposed to look with only 10k...

Unless they just finished what they wanted and the rest of the money went on booze :P
I kind of agree actually. I found FTL quite mononeous - it was fun the first few times around, but went downhill from there. I love games about exploration, but it just felt there isn't all that much to explore anymore. Funny that someone mentioned Space Rangers here - it doesn't need randomly generated galaxy, the game is so fucking complex it'll be different every time anyway :-P
