It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Is this supposed to be 'broken' like this where you have to fix the url in the code instead of a popup coming up asking you to put it in? Or is some adblocker or something perhaps preventing it from working for me?

Yes, you have to insert the URL manually. It always worked like this here.

I see :/

That can't seriously have been intended though can it? I was kind of hoping the update a few days ago was going to fix this but no dice. I'm willing to bet a lot of people don't even know how it works.

Indeed, it's not very convenient, but at least we HAVE the ability to use the url tag, and I guess it wasn't very high on their to-do list.
Select text, click the make link button, paste URL between url= and ]. (current system)

Select text, click the make link button, paste URL in the pop-up box. (your suggestion)

I don't see much of a difference between these two actions, if anything I prefer the first, but maybe I'm too used to writing code elsewhere?

Only real differences are that in the current way, it's all too easy to accidentally highlight more (or less) characters than intended and that you have to actually highlight something in the first place. So it's true, it's not that much of a difference, but still there is some.

1) Not everyone knows forum code or knows where it's supposed to go.
2) my version, the popup comes up and I CTRL-V paste and I'm done after I click ok. It just makes far more sense as it's pretty much common convention as well.
