orcishgamer: ...most of the people voting won't be doing so with any reasonable level of knowledge, so who gives a fuck?
avatar
tangledblue11: Pot, meet kettle.
I thought I'd made it clear that I don't vote.

I can totally see how you want to have a rational discussion with me, though. Do you get many debate partners this way?

EDIT: This is somehow common around here, someone (who I won't call out by name) kept PMing me the other day, insisting that I talk with him about my views, but he started by characterizing my views as "burning everything down" in his initial message.... Yeah, I can see how that would be productive...

It is disappointing that you don't vote but I was pointing out the irony of a person who is far from knowledgeable accusing others of not being knowledgeable. I chuckled for a second then realized it's actually sad.

See, you're not really convincing me that you're worth debating with, if this is how you treat your opponent, it's hardly worth it, now is it?

On the topic of the debate, it comes down to two issues: substance and style. On substance, it was pretty even, however Romney got the last word most of the time, so his 'substance' tended to win. On style, Romney simply destroyed Obama. Obama looked like a lost student that picked the wrong classroom on the first day of school and therefore couldn't understand a word of what the teacher, Romney, was saying; he just kept his head bowed and stared at his feet in shame. Quite simply, Obama was schooled.

I am not talking about the actual truthfulness of the arguments (policy wonks will argue those until they are blue in the face), and I am not talking about what each candidate was actually feeling. I am just stating how they came across to me (and apparently most of the U.S.). Romney looked Presidential, Obama looked beaten.

As for the Laffer Curve, it was taught in Econ 202, Intermediate Macro-economics, for me. I met Arthur Laffer as an undergrad (government/economics double major) at U of Virginia when he gave a small presentation to the Economics Department. Nice, very intelligent guy; not at all a crackpot. ;)
Best summary I've seen so far: "Who won? Not you!"

Thanks for sharing, so glad I did something more productive last night than waste my time with that horseshit.

Yep, I would be the Goldwater Republican of whom that guys speaks. I certainly am not enamored with either candidate.

I did watch the debate though, because I actually enjoy that sort of thing. In high school, I used to leave the TV in my bedroom on C-Span just for background noise. Yes, I admit that I am not normal... :P

Lol, no, you might just not be normal, but we all do weird things, just not always involving C-Span;)
If you people elect that wingnut mormon, you deserve what you get.

This election is like Americans on a ship with a broken rudder headed for an iceberg thinking that changing who is at the wheel makes a difference.

Culture distracts us from our mortality, and politics distract Americans from the flailing of their dying hegemony.

Are you on acid or is that a naturally incoherent post? Also, nice zinger on the man's religion. Want to crack any racist jokes while you're at it? Sounds like that's right up your alley.

You had a fundamentalist christian who surrounded himself with people whose foreign policy philosophy revolved around a belief that the Jews must inhabit the holy land to bring about the prophesied rapture, and that long-term economic/enviromental planning is irrelevant due to the impending apocalypse, and you wonder why I criticize Americans for voting for ANOTHER religious whackjob?

tangledblue11: Anyone watch the first US presidential debate tonight? What did you think? I've been a political junky for well over a decade now and I have never seen such a one-sided presidential show down. I'm curious to know how others reacted.
Romney won. Simple as that. The president seemed a bit distracted (dare I say smug, at times). I hope he is better prepared for the next debate.

Could be Nixon vs. Kennedy 1960 all over again, the public choosing the wrong guy, for the wrong reasons.
All politcal stuff aside, I'm going to say that Obama's 20th Wedding Anniversary was more important to him than the first in a series of debates with Romney. That's just what I think, though.

I mean, really, who wants to debating on National TV with somebody when they could be getting intimate with a loved one in one of the most famous bedrooms in the land?

Somebody who willingly put his private life asidfe by candidating for president of the one of the greatest (most important?) countries in the world?
