Aliasalpha: I think he also has to go back and replay fallout 1 & 2 without the rose tinted glasses, they frankly weren't that good
Fallout 1 & 2 were pretty good. A decade ago. A decade which has seen a vast array of gameplay improvements. Especially in RPGs.

Navagon: Bugs are barely mentioned in the article, actually (although they do mention the crappiness of the engine a fair bit). Their main concern seems to be how uninventive the environments are and how exploration has gone from being a joy in Fallout 3 to a chore in New Vegas. Essentially how it feels unfurnished and without that same attention to detail.
avatar
H2IWclassic: Bugs and rough edges tend to happen when you have a short (1 year) development schedule and are divided between 3 games at once. Didn't Bethesda take 2 years on Fallout 3 by itself?
But Obsidian had a baseline to work with. From a lot of what I am reading, this sounds like a Fallout 3 mod to begin with.

orcishgamer: Sometimes you gotta use the only voice you have. I don't honestly care if we see another Fallout game (and I was a huge Fallout fan and have been a Wasteland fan since childhood) if I have to accept it on crappy terms. There are more games worth playing out than I will ever get to in my lifetime already, there's no reason I have to compromise my convictions just because it's Fallout.

Delixe: I would rather buy the game even if I have to jump through hoops knowing when Bethesda look at the sales figures they will consider making Fallout 4. Not buying New Vegas doesn't send them a message you are unhappy about Steam it tells them you don't want the game. It's better to buy the game and send them an e-mail or post on their forums you are unhappy about Steam and bought the game anyway. If the FOSE team cannot get it working on New Vegas and there is no NV version of FOOK or FWE then you can believe they will get the message from modders.
No, buying it and posting on their forums sends the opposite message, that you'll whine and moan and still buy their crap no matter how poorly they treat you. How about not buying it and telling them why? That sends the proper message. I don't care if we see Fallout 4 if they are going to do this, what exactly is hard to understand about that? This is about the DRM decision on Fallout New Vegas. You realize I have many working, non-pirated copies of 15 year old (and some older) games, don't you? I guarantee your Fallout New Vegas install won't work by then unless you find and also maintain a working crack (cause you may not be able to get one by then), which is BS, if I have to resort to nominal piracy to keep the game working that I bought, why should I buy it at all? No, I don't have to pirate it instead of buying it, cause as I said, there's plenty of great stuff to play. That is why I won't buy it.
Hey, this may not be quite on topic, but I was wondering if it would be a better idea to get fallout 3 for cheap or get New Vegas. I haven't played fallout 3 and just wanted to know if New Vegas had enough improvements to just get it and skip Fallout 3. I'm only going to get one, and I like your opinion on what to get.

With all the mods I reckon you should get both for sure. I have not played 3 but I think most would agree based on what I've heard.

Well, I'm afraid mods wouldn't be a good incentive for me, as I would be getting it for ps3. Trust me, if I had a computer that would run games made after 2003, I would be a pc gamer all the way.

Well, it's so cheap to build a good computer now these days if that helps..:)
For PS3, yeah, that could be a different story. People debate over whether 3 is good or bad, but I think all F1/2 fans agree it's not a true Fallout game (without mods anyway)..might be better to skip.

Go for Fallout 3 and get the Game of the Year Edition if possible. Then, mods, mods, mods!
Go for the cheaper Fallout 3 game of the year edition.
See if you like it.
Play it.
Then buy New Vegas when it has dropped in price.
The RockPaperShotgun review for this game is a fucking travesty, worst writing I have seen on that site by a mile.

Awesome, game design talk! So what are those advancements in gameplay on RPG games? Real time combat? I've been playing, or trying to play that free JA game we oldtimers got for free, which is older than fallout 1, and i find it more difficult than fallout 1's old turn based combat. Specifically combat speaking, games have now a lot more going on at the screen at most times, maing older games look like the traditional board games of old eras. I dont know if that makes them better games though.

Wait for a few weeks for Fallout 3 GOTY to drop i price then buy that, Im guaranteeing you at least a months work of quality fun.... if not longer... This is my plan, grab the GOTY and enjoy it on a 50" HD TV with 21' subs ripping my brain apart with every shotgun blast!

Oh and in Feb of 2004 is when beth started working on Fallout 3, but they didn't begin full blown development until they were 100% finished with oblivion... there focus now is TESV... and sweet mother of all that is holy and good i cannot wait for that game!

and its very true Obsidian only had a year to make NV due to licensing agreements... sadly thats not enough time to properly make a game, what happened was they just started modding the shit out of the core mechanics of F3, which is what they essentially did, made a Total Conversion, the look and feel of the game reminds me so much of F3 that's its hard to think of NV as nothing more then a bad ass mod.

Speaking of Badassery... The Fallout Zombie Apocalypse is a yottaton (yeah thats right a yotta, goggle that!) of awesomeness...

just be warned it'll totally bork your saves, enable it and relaize that the apoc is active and the entire population can become infected and go insane, once insane they will rage untill killed and then become zombies!

Oh yeah, freaking 28 days later man... i use this with a perma fog ground cover, full moon and perma midnight mod... scary as hell.. or and i added in the creepy doom3 music and some from children of the korn for ambiance in the wilderness... nothign like whispers and wind... plus screaming babies to freak you out!

You really have to experience it for yourself, it's not a long review. Calling "Little Lamplight" a great piece of design was probably a stand-out piece of idiocy, and in the opening he is really insulting to Obsidian as a studio.
