I can't believe there's not a thread about this already. The game is in early alpha but already good fun.

As the name suggests, you build factories. It's something of a cross between TTD (in the sense of setting up networks of things) and Minecraft.

You start off by crafting some simple machines that can gather resources much faster than you and then pile those resources back into further automation (e.g. so that the ore from your mining machinery gets taken to furnaces, smelted and possibly even assembled into something by machine).

I haven't got far enough up the tech tree, but as I understand it you start to get basic logic circuits to control your factory.

Give the demo a try: https://www.factorio.com/demo/stable
Time flew away after starting that...very addicting. As much as I actually like micro-management it was a bit inconvenient when you have multiple resources gatherings and had to fuel up running between them, perhaps later getting a automation for that too though. :P

Combat was also too fast for my taste in this kind of game but at least I survived. Great stability for an alpha too, no issues that I noticed anyway.

I'm on mission 3 before shutting down for now. How many missions are there in the demo and if you buy it, do you get access to the full alpha or is that for supporting the creators/future full access?

Oh yeah, you're probably still on the 'everything is coal powered' tech-stage, right?
Well either way, you can soon automate the fuelling process. Once you get a power station then few things require fuel anyway.

The combat is fast, but it's really easy; you just hold space down while dodging. There are automated turrets later and you could even set up an automated ammo production and turret loading system (theoretically, I haven't actually done this).

When I played the demo mission 3 was the last one I think... There's definitely more in the full alpha. I think only two additional campaign missions so far, but there's also a sandbox mode with procedurally generated maps. I don't remember the sandbox being in the demo when I played but it might be there now. If not, it's there in the full alpha.

I think at the moment they're leaving the development of further campaign maps until after they have more elements implemented.
It would be cool if the ultimate goal in a game like this is to create a perpetual motion machine but to do that you've to find some very rare anti-matter / dark matter to manipulate friction or something. :)

I've boughgt too many games lately so I won't buy the alpha for now but I might get it later.
Isn't Factorio the new striker for Italy? From what I here he makes them the team to beat in the upcoming World Cup 2014!

Maybe two or three weeks ago I found a let's play about it and found it interesting. I also tried quickly the demo and liked the build-up and crafting, like in Minecraft. What I don't get so far is in which direction the game will go - open-world with main focus on crafting and less fights/enemies or a real-time strategy game against enemies (which looks more likely as there are scenarios and enemies planned). I must say I hate it to build something up and then get it destroyed, so with a big focus on competitive gameplay it's less interesting for me. I will have an eye on this game and maybe check the forum to get more details, but I believe I will wait for now.

Same here.

In the sandbox mode it seems you can turn off enemies altogether.

I just played the 3rd mission and I lost because I was a little slow in creating a system so I could get stones or iron for ammo. The enemies are really unnecessary in the beginning, pity you need the sandbox to turn them off.

Well, I think they're somewhat necessary for the campaign. They provide the challenge in this case. Still, it's early days and they might come up with some peaceful campaigns with other kinds of challenge.
True but I suck at multitasking. :P
Hey, I've just watched some Factorio videos on Youtube (LP by Quill18).
The game is still in alpha, but it seems interesting!

If everything goes well, I hope that it will be on GOG too!
I saw a Let's Play about Factorio a few weeks ago as well, so someone is doing some good promoting. I didn't pursue it to the alpha, because no time in the world, but it did look pretty interesting.
A link to the wishlist since I didn't see it on this thread: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/factorio
