I think I've broken the first one; went back up the stairs to the floor where you had to put gems into eyes to make the stairs appear, explored a bit more, and now the stairs aren't there are the gems are disappearing when I click on them (no, not into my inventory). What an irritating thing to happen; I guess I might try again at some point.
