Miaghstir: Computer:
Victor V386SX (year: 1989)
Problem:
Main battery completely dead and the machine loses CMOS settings when being shut down. I can't figure out where the CMOS battery sits, if there even should be one, and getting a new main battery isn't too easy any more.
Of course, I can use my 1994 Macintosh Performa 475 instead, that one works beautifully and even has ethernet added-in. Doesn't play DOS games though.
I would like to upgrade to a Power Mac 9600. Even a Quadra 840 would be appreciated.
Ah the Performas. I cut my teeth playing MechWarrior 2, Civ 2, WC2, and Descent/Descent 2 on my Performa 6320. I really thought it was the shizzle back then for having a built-in cable TV tuner card with RCA inputs/outputs...
Anyway, I'm pretty sure that there are DOS cards for the Performas out there that had an x86-compatible Cyrix "486" chip in them, though I don't recall if they're only compatible with the Performa 630. Regardless, I think they were PDS cards, so you may have to remove your Ethernet card for it to work...I'm likely wrong though.
And if you're really desperate for an old Mac that you'd take a "G1" PPC Mac, or even a faster '040 Mac, have you tried looking to places like Craigslist for old Sawtooth G4s or Blue and White G3s?
