lotr-sam0711: Hollywood is stupid. They've gotten so desperate they are flailing everywhere for new material. Tons of video game and book adaptions as well as tons of remakes.

Its the blockbuster mentality, a release can't just be a good movie that appeals to a certain segment of the population and does well within its target demographic, it has to be huge. In fact it has to be the biggest movie ever made every single time. Give me five to ten million and I'd give you a fuck of a good film (at least if my marks in screenwriting are anything to go by) with decent actors and good cinematography, soundtrack and editing and you'd probably still have change to buy popcorn.

TapeWorm: This boggles the mind. This reminded me of something I saw on another forum:
How long 'til we have Half-Life: The Movie where Dirk Freeman rescues the world from the evil (not Arabian at all) Combine who are planning to blow up Tower 13? Starring wise-cracking Jim Carey as Dirk Freeman, Megan Fox as Alyx, Samuel L Jackson as Elias, Ben Stiller as Barney Calhoun and the lovable antics of DOG (voiced by Hank Azaria)
Funnily enough, there's no headcrabs as the test audience didn't like them, but G-Man learns a lesson about how even non-humans can learn to care about the environment.
There's also the sexy alien Vortigaunt, and the "hilarious" adventures of the Dr. Breen.

Tell me you wouldn't pay to see that?

cogadh: Who is Dirk Freeman?

The Hollywood Bastardization of Gordon Freeman.
The former secret agent and pro wrestler who now works as a nucular physicist (note the pronunciation)
I remember one of the Studios working on "Joust: The MOVIE" a while back. Thankfully, that idea appears to of not gotten anywhere.
Errr, kinda hoping it does the same here. It's not like we need more awful game-to-film releases.
Well I hate to say it but after all the godawful licenced games based on movies, I think the game industry owes the movie industry a few more.
Hollywood lacks some imagination and want to adapt famous videogames... well, I can understand that... somehow...
But what I don't understand is the games that are chosen to be adpated. I mean, each time it's a game without scenario (Mortal Kombat, Doom,...) or a game already a lot inspired by movies (Resident Evil, Tomb Raider,...). In this second category, some games have a good scenario, but the adaptation ruins it almost each time...
WTF with these studios?? I can easily understand that adapting a well-known game can be lucrative, but at least, do it right! Choose a game that is not already a copy/paste of a movie, that has a story, and don't ruin it by re-writing (wondering if "writing" is the good term here...) a stupid crap instead.
Or, better idea: stop with game adaptations, if you can't do it right...

I hesitate to suggest it lest it come true but the mighty Grim Fandango could make an excellent movie. Who was the director for Dark City? That had a good solid vibe to it

According to the DVD next to me:Alex Proyas not only directed it, he also produced it, wrote the story and co wrote the screenplay.
good film too!
I figure part of the problem is many hollywood suits don't even really know what they're buying. They're not fans of the books or the games, they just make a deal without knowing too much about the franchise, except how famous or how big a fanbase it may have. Asteroids was big in it's day. Who's to say some suit didn't think he could milk that?
Wait this games prime time is long over, why now? why?
Isn't this a waste of money buying the rights? i mean theres no story whatsoever. they could in fact just make a space movie and call it meteorites, i think people can see the similarities.
But hey i am not complaining, i am just on of those guys who likes to watch a top down movie about people shooting things. yup...
