East India Company is a nice game, but it has a slew of flaws. Luckily the company behind the game really listened to peoples complains, and when they made its semi-sequel Commander: Conquest of the Americas, they fixed most of the problems that the original had, without removing what made the original interesting. Commander is a flat out better game, but I do prefer the theme of East India Company (I can't think of any other game that deals with this particular chapter in history).

The Gamer's Gate version of Commander is DRM-free, but all other use Steam.
