He put down knights and dragons-metal while refusing to let circusorchestra Iron Maiden use "Dune" as a title for a song? I don't really see how this could offend anyone. I put down artists and genres or just people in general on a daily basis. Don't we all? If Frank Herbert didn't like Maiden or middleearth-metal then thats his right, right? And letting artists in that genre know how little he appreciates them is also his right, right?

About the Dune games; Yes! Especially the first one! Stephane Picq's soundtrack was amazeballs!

Breath taking? Awesome? Unforgettable? It's my second favourite game of all time (based on my favourite novel of all time).

It's a good game, but some of the changes to the setting were just horrible, in my opinion.

D2k was pretty much a remake of D2 using the C&C mechanics. It was okay, in my opinion. Could have been better, especially if they had used the novel instead of the movie as inspiration, but it could have also been worse.

I never played FHD myself, but from what I heard, it's abysmal.

Yeah, all those adjectives are entirely appropiate. :D

I managed to forgive it, just to have the chance to revisit that universe once again. ;)

About FHD, I read some reviews at the time, and (except for the odd -but typical in some publications- "let's praise the game in all its glory"), the gameplay received severe critics...

Well, I don't give up the hope to see some of the Dune games released here eventually. After SS2, everything seems possible. ;)

Of course it's his right, I never insinuated it wasn't. What pisses me off is that he condemned a genre as "noise" because he didn't like it. Again is that illegal? No way, but it does show he is an asshole. You don't see me going around calling things crap just because I don't like them.

I have the CD version too.. but to be frank, I never quite figured out how to play the game, or what was the point of it all. Run around in different rooms discussing with the talking heads, then head out to fly... somewhere... :) Is this an adventure game, or a strategy game, or a bit of both, or neither? In that sense, maybe I got a bit of Cinemaware vibe with the game, they usually seemed to mix light adventuring with action and strategy sequences too.

I guess I need to try to replay Dune at some point.

Dune 2 on the other hand, I got the gameplay idea instantly, even though the gameplay was something I had not seen before.

Yup, its definitely strange. It starts off looking like an adventure game but it is really just a strategy game, maybe with a bit of exploration. After the first hour maybe it becomes just a matter of managing your fremen, harvesters and weapons, finding new caves that they hide in, training troops, etc, etc. If you are into the Dune lore, its not a bad game.

I played Dune 2 before Dune and the style of game did take me by surprise but over time I learned to appreciate it. I think it has probably held up better than Dune 2 has over time...

Will love to see the Dune games here (at least the RTS ones). I have Dune 2000 and Emperor: Battle for Dune in physical media but will love to have a legal copy of Dune 2 and digital backups of the other two

Well, Dune 2 had (and still has) that "nice" feature that there could be only a certain amount of items in the game area. This made some of the last missions quite "interesting", as suddenly there were so many units that the limit was reached and:

- you (or the enemy) couldn't build more units or build more buildings, until something was destroyed first

- but even that wasn't necessarily possible anymore at that point, as your units couldn't even fire any bullets, as bullets were considered as items as well. :)

So there you were, stuck, hoping that your sluggishly firing units would be able to destroy even one enemy or building. Quite often at that point you had to restart the level from the beginning, and try to be more proactive in attacking the enemy bases so that the unit limit would never be reached.

In that case you're a much more mellow and reflected man then I am, sir! :)
