ale81drummer: This game is fucking awful.

Also, GameRager, you are really annoying. Considering you've been trying to redeem yourself after trolling and receiving negative reputation because of it, you're really taking the wrong route by arguing with everyone about how much this game clearly sucks. I'm not sure who could enjoy a game like Duke Nukem Forever; certainly not anyone who played Duke 3D, or even Duke 1 and 2 when they were new. You're either just constantly jonesing for an argument, or you have no taste whatsoever. Maybe both.

OctopusMan: Are you criticizing him for going against the popular opinion? Do we make the world a better place if we copy the current consensus instead of making up our own minds? Since you think that it is clear that this game sucks I must ask you, have you played it yourself?

As for me I think it is something between not so good and ok, but as I haven't played it I don't really know.
Stonebro beat me to it. No, I'm not criticizing him for having a different opinion. I'm criticizing him for being incredibly annoying about it, and arguing with everyone about every topic in every thread--and if he's not arguing he's being overly dramatic and self-centered.

And yes, I have in fact played the game. At least, I think I have. I'm still trying to find a game within this sloppy mess of horrible ideas. No matter how much I play, I'm wondering when the damn thing will begin. Where's the non-stop action? I didn't even get to blow a guy up with a RPG before the developers decided to shrink me to the size of a gerbil and make me jump ramps in some of the worst level design I've seen in a good long while.

DNF served much better as a vaporware joke than an actual game. They should have built onto the foundation that earned so many fans and created the legacy of Duke. Instead, they changed the gameplay into modern day mediocre garbage, complete with the standard regenerating health and two-weapon carrying system of post-Halo shooters. The load times are also awful, and the humor just wreaks of Randy Pitchford in every detail. I can actually hear him laughing about the poop you can pick up and throw.

That bit with the alien rape scene sounds tasteless and fucking disgusting, especially if he's right about every joke practically falling flat.
2/10 seems about right. I don't often agree with Destructoid but they've hit the nail on the head with this one.

Duke Nukem's reputation is 'forever' tarnished now.
I wish Sterling would be this objective with all the games he reviewed. The game is consolized crap from it's weapon limitations to its click this button repeatedly bosses to its on-rails level design to its regening health, etc. etc. Never mind the Day One DLC. If people still don't believe the 'consolization' thing just compare Duke 3D to Duke Forever and tell me which is the better PC game.

GameRager: I also blame those who wanted the game rushed out instead of redone to a better level on both sides(Randy Pitchford and co on one side and many fans on the other.)
avatar
sethsez: The game was not "rushed out" by any stretch of the imagination. It came out the way it did because Broussard was completely incapable of enacting a feature freeze and finishing what they had rather than constantly adding in new gimmicks or trying to tack on more visual effects to an engine that couldn't easily accommodate them (seriously, the engine's performance is downright awful, despite being ugly as sin, and that just shouldn't be the case).

Without a clear direction in mind or strong enough leadership to set reasonable goals and ensure that they get met, a project of this magnitude will never get finished. This isn't a game that would have benefited from more time, because there was too much work to be done and the tech was already on the verge of collapsing. Throwing more time at it got us where we are now, so I'm not sure why you think even more time would have helped at this stage. They were at the "shit or get off the pot" stage so Gearbox released it, knowing that the IP would sell the game no matter what, with plans to make the next game properly.
I meant it was rushed out by GBX in that they could've stuck to the current tech and cleaned it up better but they didn't because they were greedy and fans were in too much of a hurry to wait.

I agree that hopefully the next game will be good though.
The flaws are in the design decisions not the polish.

Say you don't like the game or it's good, not nothing special in your eyes. For you, is just owning Duke Nukem Forever good enough for you? Being part of Duke's return from vaporware hell? I think it is for some. Heck at times this weekend I even pondered that.

still nothing on how good the multiplayer is? i thought it would become popular like how they used to play it on Kali or TEN

If the game has issues I will criticize them after playing, but I am just happy to have it in my hands.......now to find and "obtain" all the old builds. :D

Supports max 8 players. That's unacceptable.

This is the game after Gearbox polished it up. Given the absolutely ridiculous history, the obscene amount of legacy code that must be lurking within this thing, and the ludicrous amount of money that was already poured into it, the only way to make something better than this without a complete restart would have cost so much money and taken so much time that it wouldn't have made any business sense whatsoever.

Saying Gearbox didn't polish the game up is unfair. They did. The game was most likely in far worse shape than this when they got it. This is Exhibit A for the phrase "you can't polish a turd."

*cough* you are joking right? 8 players was the standard for the PS2 and Xbox, hell the Dreamcast could handle 4! 8 players? EIGHT? Fuck me.

Many duke4 posters have even said they could've done more. 1/3 the textures aren't even polished, and the rest are.
