Just came across this game over at D2D (presently on sale for $9.95), and after reading up a bit on it & checking some YouTube videos for it, I've got some questions about the Combat system.

I only like turn-based combat (Fallout 1 & 2, Might & Magic 1-5), but I get the impression that this might be something I'd like. It says I can pause to give orders each round, but how exactly does that work? Seeing as it uses a 4 character party, I'll go with the standard FMTC party to illustrate my interpretation on how orders might be given...

Fighter - go attack "enemy x" via melee combat with your axe
Mage - launch a fireball into the group of enemies firing arrows at us off in the distance
Thief - fire your bow at "enemy x" while Fighter hacks away at him
Cleric - cast a heal spell on the Fighter, he's not looking too good

...and then the round would play out in real-time & start a new round for me to give new orders. Is that about right? And what determines the order of who goes first?

I may have more questions, depending on how combat is explained to me. If it still sounds like something I'd like, I'll ask them. If not, then that'll be the end of this thread. ;-)

I bought it myself today on GamersGate. It's cheaper for you on D2D with the SHOWERS code though. So I am interested in this thread as well.
The combat system is VERY similar to Baldur's Gate, Never Winter Nights and A Farewell to Dragons.

You've pretty much summed it but it's all in real-time so you run up to the enemy, hit space to pause, select what you're characters all meant to be doing at the moment and to which enemies, then hit space again to unpause and let it run.

The difference from Baldur's Gate is that you're more down into everything like Zelda Ocarina of Time more so than overhead isometric and, like Never Winter Nights, you can use the WASD to steer your main character (other party members automatically follow) instead of pointing and clicking them everywhere.

This is a REALLY awesome game, IMO and the second game "River of Time" is three times better because it has a more organized and meatier story and more professional voice acting.....erm but the German acting is much better than the US acting.
Yeah, ummm...believe it or not, I haven't played any of those particular games you mentioned, so the comparisons are lost on me. Although I did play ToEE! :-D

Good to know I've got the basic idea of combat, and good to hear also that you approve of the game. Always a good sign to ask about a game & have someone speak up & say "Yeah, its awesome!"

I found out there's a demo for it on their website, but for anyone interested be aware, it's a 508MB download.

Fujek: If you want to try the river of time as well, the German web presence offers a (German) demo (1.4 GB size).

You mention that you checked some YouTube videos, but have you seen this combat focused one?
I'd say this should answer most of your questions.
Thanks Fujek!
