KyleKatarn: I wonder if this will be like George Lucas with the original Star Wars movies. People should only have the digital remakes according to him. Many fans just want some of the more ugly things in the movies that were due to limitations at the time cleaned up a little bit, not a new Max Rebo band. I think there's a pirate version floating around that accomplished just that though ;)
F4LL0UT: At least they did provide a DVD release of the original unedited Star Wars trilogy at some point (in 4:3 format though). I doubt something like that will happen with Doom. And sure, people will resort to piracy to get the original version - who can blame them. Bethesda could have at least included the original unedited versions with the BFG edition as a "bonus" (which would be considered the best part of the package by lots of people). Reminds me, I should grab Quake 4 before they do something similar for that one.
Heh Doom 3 BloodyFuckinGarbage Edition is more like it.

Magmarock: Lol why it was terrible I can recommend so many better games. Like Amnesia if you want to be scared and Painkiller if you want action.
Why'd you find it terrible? It's a solid FPS with a good atmosphere and good (tho linear) level design. The weapons were satisfying and I got to key hunt and blow demons away. It didn't get as fast paced as the original DOOMs but there were moments it picked up. It seems most of the time people hate this game because it either a) was not 100% like the original DOOMs or b) they bitch about the flashlight and how dark it is or c) both. I don't understand any of those complaints but at the same time I don't care to. I enjoyed it!
Amnesia and Painkiller are great games, but all three games don't play the same.

I personally thought Painkiller was pretty lame... And you do not get to shoot shit with a shotgun in Amnesia although I might be mistaken.

I found Doom 3 to be absolutely disappointing... but over the years, it sort of grows on you. I still wouldn't put it anywhere near my top FPS list, and I wish it played a lot more like the first two games, but hey, it's unique, and we did get a lot of great shooters between the release of Doom II and Doom 3 to make up for not being quite the Doom game most people were expecting.

As far as the darkness goes, I think at this point even John has admitted that it was a mistake. Darkness in the originals was great because you had places that were very dark and most of the time you could see what you were doing. And they made effective use of that.
There were some neat things like the airlock, but the whole game played like a different franchise, which is a problem. After 10 or so years, they could have just left the series to rest and started a new franchise, rather than trying to cash in on the name again.

I've also played Fear and while I thought Fear had better combat I failed to be scared when I could slow down time. Just like in doom 3 I failed to be sacred when I can just shoot stuff. Also it's the future so why am I using a flashlight.
In short the horror aspects holds back the action and the action aspects hold back the horror. It's just my opinion, but I feel that many deserve more attention.
To each their own I guess, try Serious Sam and Unreal Tournament

I never played Doom 3 (just the demo), but it sounds like if I want to play the original game and not the BFG edition I'm gonna have a tough time tracking it down.

They'll probably do a deal like the boys behind S.T.A.L.K.E.R. did and offer an extra percentage off to current owners of Doom 3 the first time the BFG goes on sale.
Very odd that they removed Doom 1 and 2. I bought those on my first Xmas sale, I wonder are they in my account still? Not that it matters, since I am refusing to accept their new TOS, and as such, cannot access the games I own a license for until the class action lawsuit resolves, but I digress.

You can still buy the uncensored versions of DOOM and DOOM 2.Very odd that they removed Doom 1 and 2. I bought those on my first Xmas sale, I wonder are they in my account still?
