Catshade: Hmmm...I already have Disciples 2. Is Disciples 1 different enough (in a good way) to be worthy a $4.99?

I found the two games very similar. Disciples 2 has more content and polish, but if you want more of the same, just a little rougher and a bit clunky (due to age), grab #1. $5 is worth it. I had fun with it.
Got them all already, despite being really bad at strategy games. Have fond memories of the first JA1, but couldn't help but feel very intimidated by the sheer complexity of JA2.
As for Disciples, I got burned by the first game and the whole "overworld spell-spamming" ridiculousness which characterizes the game's otherwise solid variant on the HOMM formula. Great art design, though, and I'm sure the second game is a whole lot better although I haven't got around to that yet...

Great deal! Turn based strategy is my favorite genre, and perhaps also where GoG shines the most. I already have Disciples 2, though I haven't played it yet.
The artwork seems great, though the fact that just a few units will decide the fate of kingdoms seems unrealistic to me, but for some people it may be a good thing.
Jagged Alliance 2 is a game I have waited for a sweet deal to buy, since I haven't had the time to play all the great games yet. I have great expectations for it.
But an issue that would be of value to potential customers here is:
Do Jagged Alliance 1 and Disciples 1 have things that are different from their sequels that could be of value to gamers that are not fans of the series?
For a comparison I do think that Heroes of Might and Magic II offers an unique experience from HoMM III and even though HoMM III could be said to be an improved game with a bit more strategic and tactical options I like HoMM II even more.
But I'm a real fan of these two games and the things that HoMM II offer that HoMM III can't provide are very different music and artwork (both are great, very detailed and well made, but HoMM II has the best atmosphere) and a different balance between factions and spells.
Things like titans and dragons being the mightiest units in HoMM II while the annoying Arch angels being the mightiest (with the exception of a few neutrals) in HoMM III will not matter to most non-fans but do matter to people like me.

As far as I am concerned - the simplicity, art style and well-made maps of the first Disciples made me complete the game twice (edit: and by twice I mean twice for each race). Never finished the campaign of the second part, something just didn't "click" in the brain and I got bored halfway through. However I have to admit, the extended unit trees do add a lot to the experience of the sequel.

Spell spamming and dodging/preventing the enemies' spam is an incredible part of the fun, in my opinion. And something HOMM could make use of, even if in a seriously limited form. Oh, and did you try undead/demons? Their "shroud" spells simplify the process a lot.

I have all of them except Disciples 1 and JA: Deadly Games. Neither one is especially high on my wishlist, but for 50% off, I'll pick them up anyway. Thank you GOG!

As I implied above, my meager intelligence may not be enough to comprehend the intricacies of Disciples 1's gameplay mechanics, but in my comparatively brief time with the game (i.e. a couple of long nightly sessions with the Human campaign) it seemed that spell spamming
1) made the slow process of building up armies (which is what I appreciated about Disciples 1 in the first place) completely pointless, since well-placed summons and lightning bolts etc. could essentially decimate them in an instance,
and
2) made every damn turn take AGES to resolve.
That said, I never really understood how to dodge/prevent spamming (other than simply staying away from all enemies on the map, which suffice it to say is not really a viable long-term strategy in a HOMM-style game). I did check out various FAQs and walkthroughs which suggested that I wasn't really missing out on any crucial gameplay mechanics (and that's when I gave up completely), but judging from your post there seems to be a bit more to it than that.
Still prefer economy-based game structures (such as HOMM), though; if only because they tend to be more straightforward and immediately intuitive...
I am building up the collection....but haven't got time to finished any one of the game.....
I got Disciples II, I like turn based strategy game, so I will grab the first one from this deal.
But the other modern theme games don't appeal to me. Thanks GOG for not making them as a bundle discount...
AAAaargh... I've been considering getting JA2 lately. Do I have a choice now? Damn you GOG! Perfect timing... I feel mugged out of 25 $
...and the backlog continues to grow faster than it can be played.
Great promo, who doesn't have Disciples 1/2 by now really should get them at this price.
I got Disciples 1 and 2 already, and all the Jagged Alliance series is on my wishlist for a long, long time... :)
So, damn you GOG! You know that sooner or later I won't resist buying the jagged alliance series... still, you keep and keep tempting me.

frostcircus: I video reviewed JA2 twice. It's fantastic. Everyone needs to own it.

Well then, please post your video reviews. ;)

Disciples 2 Gold is a lot of fun and worth buying even if you have the some iteration of the similar HOMM series. Not as replayable by far, IMO, as there is no random map generator. But you get a lot of campaign, and it really is fun stuff. Good enough to lead to lack of sleep many many nights running.

Nice, both of them. I liked the 1st link, the voice and the chosen music fits well with the pace of the video, I don't know how to say it, but it fits.
Ahhh and they were part of the NooBTooB + GOG review contest... Damn, I had forgotten that this exists, now I'll have to come back to that thread and watch some of 'em. GOG should do more of these, now there are a lot more customers so there would be more entries in the contest. :)
