Anyone know why a dvd/CD would read that it is empty even though it isn't?
I just finally got my copy of Penumbra Collection and when I put the disc in the drive it was asking if I wanted to format it....
It was very strange my neighbor's laptop read it fine....
All my drivers are up to date... right now due to orders no one has internet in their rooms...so I wont be able to see any replies untill morning at least...
I have tried rebooting my laptop and my desktop neither read the disc....
anyone know if I could install it on an external hard drive and then play it off of that?
sigh...... guess it is gonna be an early night....It is driving me crazy...

Have you checked the physical connections for your drives? A cable could be loose or crooked.
If all your connections are good as cogadh suggested . . . it may be like my old Toshiba which had a drive that would only read DVD/CD +R disks. Everything else it did as you describe . . . but that was years ago . . . =)
What drives do your desktop and laptop use? Post the model name here.
A firmware update for your drive might solve the problem if nothing else suggested works.
If nothing posted above works, try contacting Frictional Games, and request a download version of the game. Show them your proof or purchase and stuff.
You never know, they might allow you to download it.
The fact that it asks to format it is interesting. I wonder if it's some kind of conflict with a UDF packet writer you may have installed - sometimes called "DLA". Do you have a disc burning app that might enable "drag and drop" to CDs? See here for some background.
I wonder if there's something about the disc that is tricking DLA into seeing an uninitialized disc.
Try uninstalling that app and see if it helps. Otherwise, grab Daemon Tools and make a disc image from your friend's laptop, at least you can get going that way.
The desktop was dusty as hell inside canned air and checking the wiring got it working....The desktop was not reading anything...Generally do not fire up my desktop because well my laptop travels easier and
My laptop is a alienware... dvdrw drive... it will read other dvd/cd's... which seemed odd.. tonight ill try to uninstall the cd writing program see if that fixes it... if not ill prolly make an ISO of the disc and put it on a flash drive...
Thanks for the ideas, will try and grab the info later........
Thanks... Uninstallled my disc writing software and it read the disc like a charm... Note to self...... need to put my desktop into storage at least for now
