I just got an email saying the following:

Download your favorite game purchases from Direct2Drive. We plan to have as many game files as possible available on GameFly. Just to be sure, please download your old game files before the transition.

Now, let me get this clear: I own about 60 games on Direct2Drive and combined, this would be 100GB at least. They want me to download all of those in just a week or two? Are they kidding me? Most people here have a download limit here of 30GB a MONTH!
This sounds bad. Fortunatelly, I don't have even an direct2drive account, but if they did something like that, any other company may do the same in future...

Digging through their FAQ on their site, I discovered that they were a bit misleading - they basically said that OLDER games won't be hosted on GameFly - but they don't make any indication of what they consider old. Is three years old? In any case, I don't feel like downloading all those games except the most recent ones to be safe.
"Any D2D titles not immediately available should become available shortly thereafter."

Sounds to me like they plan to have everything from D2D available on Gamefly eventually, and that they're just suggesting you download so you won't have to wait it out.

I would download the older and unpopular games first just in case you run out of time. I'm sure the newer gamers (last 5 years) and POPULAR older games will be available within a few months. I have Dragon Age Ultimate and I'm pretty sure they will transfer that no problem.
I downloaded everything a while back. Except that Westward game I got for free for some reason, not interested in that one.

But yes, this sucks. And as I said before, if they're doing this to Direct2Drive... what's in store for MobyGames?
This is why I personally backup every game I buy or have bought for me around the time of getting it. This sucks for those affected with no time to DL everything, though.
Oh well, 1 less dd site that i check for offers

Yep, it's quickly narrowing the field to just GOG.

This crap has already happened many times over with various big companies. The fact that people think it could never happen with Steam is rather laughable (no matter how profitable Steam is Apple or MS could easily purchase them, hell Amazon.com could as well).

I read their email again and i come to the same conclusion. Unless its an older or unpopular game, Gamefly plans to transfer it to their site. They see this as the future of PC gaming sales and want a piece of the pie. They would be crazy to do anything stupid to ruin their future reputation in this competitive market. Its similar to Gamestop purchase of Impulse. They'll probably hit a few snags along the way, but will eventually have most games available.
I only have 4 games on there, and I purchased all but Penumbra at other places. I never did like the site, and grew distrustful for some reason, probably after buying the monstrosity that is Fort Zombie.

My question is, will I be charged for having a Gamefly account, or is there a standard/premium with different benefits? I kind of want to delete the account.

I think a download account is free which is what D2D account transfer should be. If you want access to their free games library, then you will have to subscribe as a rental member. If they are stupid enough to charge a monthly fee just for download purchases then they have no chance of competing with the other digital sites.

Ahh. Thank you. I guess it won't hurt to keep it, then. In any case I think they would have to tell you they were going to charge you, which is fine as long as I can remember to check my emails so I can tell them to eff off.
