Melhelix: 2014's New Year's Sale was the Time Machine sale, which worked similarly to the Insomnia Sale from 2013's November, except every purchase added time to the game up for offer. In the years before that, as you said, the Winter sale simply spanned the distance.

Edit: I also think in 2013 there was a start of the year sale at the beginning of January, but I could be mistaken.
During the previous Christmas sale, there was a daily vote as to which among the two bundles would be the available choice. The rejected ones formed part of the Let's Party Promo! which lasted two days (31 December till 2 January).

Dang, I forgot about that... I think I was promo'd out by that point in time, much as I am right now...
I feel like an idiot because I did buy quite a few games during the sale..
but I missed Zork and etc...

I thought it would last longer/have another sale.

Zork and its sequels didn't have a special discount, but they did have the generic 50% discount that most games had during the sale.
