Slump: Unfortunately, I do not believe Diablo can be purchased stand alone anymore but you certainly can purchase it as part of the Diablo Battlechest. Not sure about in New Zealand but a copy of the battlechest can be found in just about any store that sells computer games in the U.S. Also, you can play on battle.net but I'd recommend having a friend in mind if you do, there are hacks galore. Last time I played online, about two years ago I think, it wasn't really worth the trouble. Great game though, I still beat it once a year usually.
Have to be careful - I had a friend who recently bought the battle chest and it did NOT include Diablo. I would be great if GOG would get Diablo since it is no longer readily available ... and they do have a deal with activision.

Does Activison own rights to Diablo? How does it work with Blizzard games anyway? As for the Hellfire, Blizzard doesn't sell it because they didn't develop it, it was created by Synergistic Software and released by Sierra. Looks like getting Diablo + Hellfire would be hard ;/

Activision doesn't have any rights to games made by Blizzard since they're actually independent from each other, they're just owned by the same company (Vivendi IIRC).
There's not a snowball's chance in hell that any Blizzard games could come here without a major change of policy by Blizzard.

They're under the Activision Blizzard holding company. Interesting fact is that the CEO of Activision Blizzard is also the CEO of Activision.

I'll be damned, didn't know that. Kinda pissy they would do that really. Must not think anyone has the desire to play it anymore...http://www.amazon.com/Diablo-Battlechest-new-version-Mac/dp/B0002BQN7Q/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1307550991&sr=8-2 [new version]

Stuff: Amazon is still selling the original Diablo, here anyway. What might be difficult is, besides getting it to run properly on Win 7, finding the Hellfire expansion pack which is my preferred Diablo 1 game play. . . . =)
Edit: Should mention Hellfire runs fine on my XP box, I assume the vanilla Diablo will do the same.
Ironically Hellfire was done by another company (i.e. not Blizzard North), most people prefer it though.Edit: Should mention Hellfire runs fine on my XP box, I assume the vanilla Diablo will do the same.

At the time Diablo was like nothing else so I was on it ( it along with Starcraft made Blizzard one of my favs). I preferred the Hellfire expansion for single play as it didn't allow for multi-player . . . or it did and was patched out??? Anyway, Diablo was a great game for home LAN play (4 max IIRC) but keeping the original Diablo and the Hellfire expansion working on the same system was a challenge. My friends and I played regularly.
I fired Hellfire up just now . . after being installed for years . . . ran great. The graphics will make you shudder but back than they were great . . . =)
Edit: Was curious, Wikipedia had the following -
"The expansion pack adds several enhancements to Diablo, including an additional monk class, two new dungeon settings, additional quests to undertake, several extra game items, including oils which affect item statistics, runes that can be placed as traps, a new page of spells, new affixes for weapons and armor, new shrines, new mini-boss enemy names, a noticeable boost to Diablo's strength and power, and a number of interface improvements."
