MrWilli: Definitely interesting. Any gameplay videos up yet jef? Just curious.
No, unfortunately. And I'd really love to post some. But there are a few reasons I haven't:

1) My current computer is really underpowered, so it has a hard time handling any screen capture software. This is the reason that Pit never had any sort of gameplay footage as well (which probably could have done a lot for it). Once I get a better computer (hopefully over the summer), this will change.

2) The game is currently well underway, but not in a state where much gameplay can be shown. Once enemies are added, then there should be something to show. But at the moment, it's just the player walking around and picking up stuff. A lot of mechanics have been coded, but have yet to be fully integrated into the game. A lot of these things are basically waiting for enemies to be implemented. Which is why I'm finally biting the bullet and coding the AI :)

But luckily, both of these things will change... so gameplay footage WILL go up at some point. It may take a little while, but there will be some eventually. Probably a cool trailer too, which will give you guys a taste of the music. All solo piano, very pointillist, very dreary and abstract.
What are the various tier rewards for this kickstarter?

Just kidding!

Good luck and I hope you succeed. I like seeing fellow GOGers do something positive.
If you're not going Kickstarter, another way to reward pre-orderers an option to pre-order a hard copy of the game at a slightly increased cost, but it's only available during this pre-order phase. Wadjeteye Games did this for Gemini Rue and Blackwell Deception and I think it's a great idea.

Basically just assurance that the game is still alive and kicking.
So... is this free?

somegamer786: So... is this free?
It will not be free, no.

It will be cheap, however.
Is there a non-hardcore mode that allow you reload a save? Just curious because the game sounds interesting, I just don't like dying then having to start all over again.

I'll seriously consider it. The mode would disable score saving, however. One of the things I want to do is to keep a good amount of tension between risking losing everything from dying, but possibly getting more salvage, or settling with less salvage but surviving.

Why throw that out of the window? I for one would be almost certain to play it in casual (I just don't have nearly enough time to play stuff 'hardcore' nowdays,) and if you just divided the points by 4 at the end of the game or whatever, people playing casual could compare them as well.

Also, the influence from Evan is turning the game from the solidly score-based design that I originally intended into something with a little more narrative (although it's still completely open-ended).

If enough people want the option to save, then I'll probably put it in. No sense shooting myself in the foot by alienating a good portion of people who are interested in the game.

gameon: You should do a kickstarter. Who knows where it'd get you.
I would like to. But my quandary is this:

The game doesn't need money. Well, it KINDA OF does... in that I need to build a better computer to be able to record gameplay footage and make trailers, which are required to get publicity on Desura. So in other words, I would take the funds and put them towards a gaming computer. Which doesn't seem particularly honest to me.

I dunno. Then there's the fact that it takes some effort to run a kickstarter, and I've been spending a lot of time with this whole getting engaged thing, and trying to sort out how my (our) life is going to work.

gameon: What kind of specs would you need for a decent enough pc?

Also i think its awesome that you are able to do something like programming etc. I completely failed to understand even visual basic code!

Also i'd like to ask what kind of length the game will be, and if theres a story in it etc etc. I guess i'm quite interested to see what you and your team are able to do!

And couldn't you get someone else to record/capture gameplay footage. For example, my pc isn't too bad.
My projected costs are currently around $1000, although I might go a bit higher in the GPU department (proof that my bride-to-be is awesome: she not only really wants me to build the gaming computer, but is also going to help fund it). Current projected build is as follows:

MSI H67MS-E43 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel H67 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

SAPPHIRE 100314-3L Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

XFX Core Edition PRO550W (P1-550S-XXB9) 550W ATX12V 2.2 & ESP12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Intel Core i3-2120 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I32120

CORSAIR Vengeance 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9B

Not the best, but I hope that it will be able to hold its own. Like I said, I might bump up the GPU a bit. Maybe the CPU as well.

As far as the game goes:

Realistically-speaking, it probably isn't going to be extremely long. However, it's a little hard to tell because the entire thing is basically just a huge survival sandbox. Very nonlinear, very dynamic. There's a story, but it's not going to be told in the traditional linear fashion. We aren't going to revolutionize videogame storytelling, but we're trying to shy away from the typical movie-like narratives of most games. The focus here is mostly on the dynamic gameplay, and the atmospheric exploration/desperate survival. Take a look at the development blog, if you have time. It outlines a bit about the game and has some screenshots.

And yeah, I suppose I could have someone else do it. But I'd really like to have control over the footage myself. I've done a little bit with recording game trailers, and having control over the actual capture is just as important as having control over the cutting.

gameon: Well good luck with making the game. If its successful you can make more games, and maybe one day you will have a games studio of your own.
That's the hope :D

gameon: What kind of money are we talking here...
Well, it's not going to be any more than $5. Possibly less. Although I honestly think that if it accomplishes most of what I want to do, $5 is quite a reasonable price. $10 would be fairer, but I doubt anyone would pay that for a game from an unknown. Unfortunately, the devaluing of indie titles that's been happening recently means that a lot of people will probably see even $5 as overpriced.

gameon: Unfortunately the economy is terrible right now, so its hard for startup companies as much as it is for the big companies going bust. I've not got much spare cash, but for some reason your project intrigues me. I like the fact that you're giving it a go and are part of this community. Make sure you give the project as much time as it needs. No need to rush anything, you might end up with something really awesome.
Hope so. Thanks for the support!
